Watch M3GAN switch from horror to action in the new sequel trailer

Engadget

The trailer for M3GAN 2.0 is here and if you were expecting a copy-paste of the original's horror vibe, you may be surprised. Instead, the sequel is embracing a turn towards action in vein of Terminator 2 complete with upgrades to the original doll, a robot showdown and... a wing suit? Set to arrive in theaters only on June 27, the film is once again directed by Gerard Johnstone and features returning cast members Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, along with newcomer Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as Amelia. It's two years after the original M3GAN doll went on a murderous rampage (including that wild dance sequence) and was eventually destroyed. Since then, its designer Gemma has become an author and voice for more robust AI oversight, while Gemma's niece Cady (who M3GAN 1.0 swore to protect) is now a teenager. Meanwhile, M3GAN's AI tech was stolen by a defense contractor to build super robot solidier Amelia.

Why you shouldn't share personal data with ChatGPT or other AI chatbots

PCWorld

There's no denying that ChatGPT and other AI chatbots make impressive chat companions that can converse with you on just about anything. Their conversational powers can be extremely convincing too; if they've made you feel safe about sharing your personal details, you're not alone. Anything you tell an AI chatbot can be stored on a server and resurface later, a fact that makes them inherently risky. The problem stems from how the companies that run Large Language Models (LLMs) and their associated chatbots use your personal data -- essentially, to train better bots. Take the movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day as an example of how an LLM learns.

'Terminator 2' star Robert Patrick decided to pursue acting after life-changing boat accident

FOX News

Robert Patrick, best known to many audiences as the unstoppable T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," wasn't always set on becoming an actor. In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, he revealed that though he was interested in acting from a young age, he didn't pursue it because "that wasn't done in my family." Instead, while living in the Cleveland area, he worked in a bank and dabbled in modeling before a life-changing boat accident inspired him to pursue his dream. Patrick said, "In 1984, I was piloting a 30-foot boat that belonged to a buddy when it capsized and sank. Five of us were in the water, including my brother, Lewis. The boat hadn't been properly prepped."

Chaos in the Cradle of A.I.

The New Yorker

In the 1991 movie "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," a sentient killer robot travels back in time to stop the rise of artificial intelligence. The robot locates the computer scientist whose work will lead to the creation of Skynet, a computer system that will destroy the world, and convinces him that A.I. development must be stopped immediately. Together, they travel to the headquarters of Cyberdyne Systems, the company behind Skynet, and blow it up. The A.I. research is destroyed, and the course of history is changed--at least, for the rest of the film. In the sci-fi world of "Terminator 2," it's crystal clear what it means for an A.I. to become "self-aware," or to pose a danger to humanity; it's equally obvious what might be done to stop it.

Terminator-liked robot liquefies to escape a cage and then reforms into its original shape

Daily Mail - Science & tech

In the 1991 film'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' T-1000 liquifies himself to walk through metal bars, and this sci-fi scene is recreated in a real-world robot. A video of a shape-shifting robot shows it trapped in a cage, melting and then sliding through the bars where it reforms on the outside. Researchers led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong created the new phase-shifting material by embedding magnetic particles in gallium, a metal with a very low melting point of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. While the team does not see the innovation threatening humanity like in the Terminator movie, they foresee it removing foreign objects from the body or delivering drugs on demand. Scientists tested the robot through a series of'obstacles.'

Sense8 was an eight-hour Netflix Original series created by Lana and Andy Wachowski, and J. Michael Straczynski. The science fiction series starred eight characters worldwide, connected by a bond that can be felt through every sense. Sense8 follows the inhabitants of Chicago, who are all connected by more than just two or three senses; they are experiencing everything that their counterparts are seeing, sensing, hearing, and feeling. The series is a love story between two characters, and as they become more connected to their sense counterparts, they begin to feel their partners' pain. They also carry the responsibility of protecting their loved ones that are constantly in danger and fighting for freedom from some sort of outside threat.

US Army developing self-healing, shape-shifting drone material

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The US Army is pulling inspiration from the popular film'Terminator 2' in designing material capable of shape-shifting and autonomously healing. Made of polymer, the 3D printable component has a dynamic bond that allows it to go from liquid to solid multiple times. The new material is also equipped with a unique shape memory behavior, providing users with the ability to be program and trigger it to return to a previous form. The military group foresees the innovation being used to create morphing unmanned air vehicles and shape-shifting robotic platforms. 'Terminator: Dark Fate' Didn't Need an Exploding Airplane

#artificialintelligence

The latest Terminator movie, Dark Fate, struggles to give satisfying emotional arcs to its large cast of characters. Writer Sara Lynn Michener says it doesn't help that a large chunk of the movie is wasted on a bombastic action sequence set aboard an exploding cargo plane. "I think there's this idea with, especially, male directors where they get really excited about trying to top what's been done before, but do it even bigger and better and more Michael Bay-ish," Michener says in Episode 386 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. Are we really doing that in 2019? Geek's Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley agrees that the cargo plane sequence was silly, and stands in sharp contrast to the sense of realism captured in the franchise's best installments, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Artificial Intelligence: Still a Long Way from Judgment Day

#artificialintelligence

The 1991 sci-fi film Terminator 2 predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) software known as Skynet would become self-aware on August 29, 1997, and rapidly take over the world. Today, even as we celebrate avoiding such an extreme outcome for 22 years and counting, we're continually scanning the field for new developments in the world of AI. Read on, and listen to our podcast with GAO's Chief Scientist and Managing Director, Tim Persons, to learn more about our work in this area. AI is far from developing into anything like Skynet. That would require AI technologies with broad reasoning abilities, sometimes called third-wave AI, which are highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.

And one in which Matthew McConaughey took the Leo role in Titanic. And Saved by the Bell's Tiffani Thiessen played Rachel in Friends. The entertainment industry isn't exactly short on "what if?" scenarios in which actors came close to, but were ultimately passed over, playing iconic roles. For more than 99% of movie history, fans have been able to do little more than squirrel away this trivia for use in pop quizzes. That is until the arrival of deepfakes.
