The Nintendo Switch is undoubtedly a less powerful games machine than the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, or a top-of-the-line gaming PC. But for Nintendo, power has never really been the point. Games developed for the Switch series never lacked for visual innovation or the artistic flourishes necessary to create inarguably beautiful worlds whose visuals fully justify playing on a really large TV. From 2.5D to watercolors, living animation to sci-fi universes, the Nintendo Switch can easily be a feast for the eyes. Almost three years ago, the Nintendo Switch OLED upped the aesthetics ante for handheld gaming. Nintendo's first-party games are legendary for their quality and often take advantage of their respective consoles better than most third-party titles. The Switch has no shortage of games designed by Nintendo, and most rank amongst the best this system offers.

The best Nintendo Switch games for 2022
Just five years ago, Nintendo was at a crossroads. The Wii U was languishing well in third place in the console wars and, after considerable pressure, the company was making its first tentative steps into mobile gaming with Miitomo and Super Mario Run. Fast-forward to today: The Switch is likely on the way to becoming the company's best-selling "home console" ever, and seven Switch games have outsold the Wii U console. However, the Switch's online store isn't the easiest to navigate, so this guide aims to help the uninitiated start their journey on the right foot. These are the games you should own -- for now.
Press F for these fan favorites that 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' snubbed
The Rayman series and its spinoff, Raving Rabbids, have found huge success on Nintendo consoles over the years, with the latter even going toe-to-toe with Mario and crew in the Switch's "Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle." The character also has a bit of history with Smash: In 2015, one of the franchise's most infamous fake leaks showed Rayman on the roster in such convincing detail, it fooled most of the fan community and inspired a movement of fan-made leaks. But Rayman already has a cameo in "Ultimate" as a spirit -- combat enhancements that pay tributes to other games -- and Nintendo seems content to leave his role at that.
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's' final fighter is Sora from 'Kingdom Hearts'
Since Sora is the last fighter to be added into "Ultimate," as a last hurrah, Nintendo showed Sora facing off all previously introduced "Ultimate" fighters and demolishing most of them. The developers designed Sora with similar controls to what he had in the original "Kingdom Hearts" franchise, and he also retains magical powers like Firaga (Fire), Blizzaga (Blizzard) and Thundaga (Thunder). Alongside his character, Nintendo also introduced a new battle stage, based on Hollow Bastion, Maleficient's castle in the original "Kingdom Hearts," a world that later was rebuilt into Radiant Garden in the second game.
Kingdom Hearts' Sora is the final 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' fighter
Nintendo has finalized the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster with the reveal of one last DLC fighter. Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Sora from Kingdom Hearts is joining the ranks. Sora is nimble and a skilled airborne fighter, but he's very light, so it's easy to launch him. Before the stream, Sakurai noted on Twitter (per Google Translate) that "new fighter may be a character you don't know." That dashed many fans' hopes that the fighter would be Waluigi or, as was previously rumored, Master Chief from Halo, though Sora isn't exactly an unknown quantity.
Is Kirby the best Super Smash Bros character? USA TODAY staff sounds off
Nintendo recently hosted Nintendo Direct live stream during the Electronic Entertainment Expo, revealing several video games coming to the company's popular video game console. Among the announcements, the company revealed the character Kazuya of "Tekken" fame is the latest brawler to step into battle as a new character in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, Nintendo didn't specify when Kazuya would make its Smash Bros. debut. In honor of the announcement, we asked USA TODAY staffers to give us their favorite Smash Bros. character main. He's from my favorite Legend of Zelda franchise game: "Ocarina of Time," and made his Smash debut in Super Smash Brothers Melee.

'Minecraft' characters come to 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' on October 13th
You won't have to wait too long to play as a Minecraft character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Microsoft, Mojang and Nintendo have followed up their teaser by confirming that Steve and Alex will be available for SSBU brawling on October 13th as part of the Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2 collection. As promised, you'll also see a Minecraft-themed stage and seven music additions. It's also clearer just how these blocky avatars will fight. You can swing your pickaxe for simple attacks, of course, but you can also "mine" stages to create blocks (as defensive tools) and craft items -- there's even a crafting table on the stage.
