DNB-AI-Project at SemEval-2025 Task 5: An LLM-Ensemble Approach for Automated Subject Indexing

This paper presents our system developed for the SemEval-2025 Task 5: LLMs4Subjects: LLM-based Automated Subject Tagging for a National Technical Library's Open-Access Catalog. Our system relies on prompting a selection of LLMs with varying examples of intellectually annotated records and asking the LLMs to similarly suggest keywords for new records. This few-shot prompting technique is combined with a series of post-processing steps that map the generated keywords to the target vocabulary, aggregate the resulting subject terms to an ensemble vote and, finally, rank them as to their relevance to the record. Our system is fourth in the quantitative ranking in the all-subjects track, but achieves the best result in the qualitative ranking conducted by subject indexing experts.
Better Recommendations: Validating AI-generated Subject Terms Through LOC Linked Data Service
This article explores the integration of AI-generated subject terms into library cataloging, focusing on validation through the Library of Congress Linked Data Service. It examines the challenges of traditional subject cataloging under the Library of Congress Subject Headings system, including inefficiencies and cataloging backlogs. While generative AI shows promise in expediting cataloging workflows, studies reveal significant limitations in the accuracy of AI-assigned subject headings. The article proposes a hybrid approach combining AI technology with human validation through LOC Linked Data Service, aiming to enhance the precision, efficiency, and overall quality of metadata creation in library cataloging practices.
A Taxonomy of Prompt Modifiers for Text-To-Image Generation
Text-to-image generation has seen an explosion of interest since 2021. Today, beautiful and intriguing digital images and artworks can be synthesized from textual inputs ("prompts") with deep generative models. Online communities around text-to-image generation and AI generated art have quickly emerged. This paper identifies six types of prompt modifiers used by practitioners in the online community based on a 3-month ethnographic study. The novel taxonomy of prompt modifiers provides researchers a conceptual starting point for investigating the practice of text-to-image generation, but may also help practitioners of AI generated art improve their images. We further outline how prompt modifiers are applied in the practice of "prompt engineering." We discuss research opportunities of this novel creative practice in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The paper concludes with a discussion of broader implications of prompt engineering from the perspective of Human-AI Interaction (HAI) in future applications beyond the use case of text-to-image generation and AI generated art.
