GrammaTech to Study AI, ML-Based Software Design Under DARPA Program - ExecutiveBiz

#artificialintelligence

GrammaTech will explore the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to automate software tools' design, testing and implementation under a contract of an undisclosed sum from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The company said Monday research findings will be available on Mnemosyne, its open source tool being designed to serve as an automated software development assistant that will help ensure documentation aligns with implementation. With support from GrammaTech, DARPA aims to help developers employ statistical machine learning, formal methods and search-based software engineering to tackle problem definition and high-level software design via the Intent Defined Adaptive Software program. "By separating problem definition from implementation, this project will help make it possible for software developers to focus on'what to do', by handling the details of'how to do it' using automated code synthesis and adaptation tools," said Alexey Loginov, vice president of research at GrammaTech. The agency plans to roll out a framework that optimizes modern software development environments and yields various types of intent specification.

STEM careers: What is it like to study AI and can I use it at work?

#artificialintelligence

In September Lucrezia started a new two-year course at Queen Mary -- a master degree apprentice as a digital and technology solutions specialist. This is a vocational course and Lucrezia is doing an apprenticeship with Siemens Mobility, the transport division of the German multinational engineering company. In her apprenticeship she uses her AI and engineering skills.

Why do we use Python for Machine Learning?

#artificialintelligence

You might have heard these words together: AI, Machine Learning, and Python. The reason behind this is that Python is one of the most suitable languages for AI and ML. Python is one of the simplest programming languages and AI and ML are the most complex technologies. This opposite combination makes them be together. In simple words, I would like to make this clear that Machine learning is really complex technology.

The Problem With Including AI In School Curriculum

#artificialintelligence

One of the main reasons to integrate AI in the current school curriculum is to make the upcoming generation familiar with technology. The Government of India and the educational board have been pushing for more artificial intelligence to be integrated into the education system, not from the perspective of enhancing it, but also with the intention of making young minds more aware and skilled when it comes to artificial intelligence. Today, children are curious about the smart conversational devices and AI used in applications like Siri and Alexa; some of them even wonder how Netflix gives them precise recommendations. Gradually, they will grow curious and try to learn what algorithms are, what a neural network is, and how they work. The Government of India and the educational board have been taking measures to make the existing school curriculum more AI-centric with a firm belief that the students will learn about AI, have fun and also take India forward.

Government backs next generation of scientists to transform healthcare and tackle climate change - Government Opportunities

#artificialintelligence

The next generation of UK scientists have been backed by government today (Thursday 24 October) to develop the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies that will transform how people live and work and help tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges. A combined government and industry investment of £370 million will deliver 2,700 new PhD places in biosciences and AI. Of this, £200 million will fund 1,000 new PhD places over the next 5 years to study AI which could help diagnose diseases like cancer earlier and make industries, including aviation and automotive, more sustainable. The first 200 students will be studying at 14 universities across the country, working closely with 300 leading businesses, including AstraZeneca, Google, Rolls-Royce and NHS Trusts. A further £170 million will fund 1,700 places to study PhDs in biosciences helping to tackle issues like feeding the world's growing population and helping people stay healthier for longer.

Why you should study AI, ML and how I did it

#artificialintelligence

The following is a guest article from Risto Siilasmaa, chairman of the board of directors, Nokia Corporation. I was fascinated by artificial intelligence during the end of the '80s and spent numerous hours working on Natural Language Processing challenges using a weird and wonderful programming language called Lisp. The effort didn't really amount to much, but at least I could forever claim I had worked in the hallowed field of AI. In 2006, the cybersecurity company I founded in 1988 started using neural networks to identify malicious applications. Though F-Secure didn't immediately enjoy much success with it -- as often happens when you're just a little bit too early with a new technology -- it was my second brush with AI and my first with machine learning.

AI researchers want to study AI the same way social scientists study humans

#artificialintelligence

It's important to note that most of these ideas aren't new. Roboticists, for example, have long studied human-computer interaction. And the field of science, technology, and society have what's known as the "actor-network theory," a framework for describing everything in the social and natural worlds--both humans and algorithms--as actors that somehow relate to one another. But for the most part, each of these efforts have been siloed in separate disciplines. Bringing them together under one umbrella helps align their goals, formalize a common language, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

Study AI: 'I believe we could see the end of cancer in our lifetime'

#artificialintelligence

Examining images and data is time-consuming and relies on the judgement and skills of highly specialised experts. Here, artificial intelligence (AI) – or deep learning – can save vast amounts of time and give much more accurate results. We're using deep learning to try and improve cancer diagnosis, as well as accelerate the search for new drugs against cancer. Using AI, a system can look at a tumour biopsy and diagnose what type it is. Algorithms generally give a more accurate diagnosis, as they are unbiased and can pick up on subtle features that are often really difficult to spot with the human eye.

IBM, MIT partner on $240M Watson AI Lab to study AI's impact and build new tools

#artificialintelligence

On Thursday, MIT and IBM unveiled plans to invest $240 million over the next 10 years to build a new MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. The lab, announced in an MIT press release, will carry out artificial intelligence (AI) research in an effort to propel forward the hardware, software, and algorithms that power AI itself. According to the release, more than 100 AI scientists, professors, and students will work on the research in Cambridge, MA, nearby the MIT campus and other IBM properties. Their work will seek to boost the impact of AI on cybersecurity and healthcare, while also examining AI's impact on society as a whole. "The field of artificial intelligence has experienced incredible growth and progress over the past decade. Yet today's AI systems, as remarkable as they are, will require new innovations to tackle increasingly difficult real-world problems to improve our work and lives," John Kelly III, IBM senior vice president of Cognitive Solutions and Research, said in the release.

The future of intelligence: Cambridge University launches new centre to study AI and the future of humanity

#artificialintelligence

Human-level intelligence is familiar in biological "hardware" – it happens inside our skulls. Technology and science are now converging on a possible future where similar intelligence can be created in computers. While it is hard to predict when this will happen, some researchers suggest that human-level AI will be created within this century. Freed of biological constraints, such machines might become much more intelligent than humans. What would this mean for us?
