Online Quantile Regression for Nonparametric Additive Models

arXiv.org Machine Learning

This paper introduces a projected functional gradient descent algorithm (P-FGD) for training nonparametric additive quantile regression models in online settings. This algorithm extends the functional stochastic gradient descent framework to the pinball loss. An advantage of P-FGD is that it does not need to store historical data while maintaining $O(J_t\ln J_t)$ computational complexity per step where $J_t$ denotes the number of basis functions. Besides, we only need $O(J_t)$ computational time for quantile function prediction at time $t$. These properties show that P-FGD is much better than the commonly used RKHS in online learning. By leveraging a novel Hilbert space projection identity, we also prove that the proposed online quantile function estimator (P-FGD) achieves the minimax optimal consistency rate $O(t^{-\frac{2s}{2s+1}})$ where $t$ is the current time and $s$ denotes the smoothness degree of the quantile function. Extensions to mini-batch learning are also established.

Statistics is at the heart of data science, and the link between the two fields keeps growing stronger. It's important to have a deep understanding of statistical concepts if you want to progress far in your career in data science, and that foundation can take a while to build. Springboard's Data Science Career Track is a great starting point, and it should be one of the first steps you take if you're serious about building your skills in this area. Let's take a look at the current state of statistics in data science, and what you can do to accelerate your learning. Some people like to say that machine learning is simply statistics with additional layers, and while that may be an exaggeration, there is still some truth to the statement. And that extends to the general field of data science.

MITx MicroMasters Program in Statistics and Data Science opens enrollment

#artificialintelligence

The new MITx MicroMasters Program in Statistics and Data Science, which opened for enrollment today, will help online learners develop their skills in the booming field of data science. The program offers learners an MIT-quality, professional credential, while also providing an academic pathway to pursue a PhD at MIT or a master's degree elsewhere. "There are many online programs that provide a professional overview of data science, but they don't offer the level of detail learners gain from an actual, residential master's program," says Professor Devavrat Shah, faculty director of the program and MIT professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). "This new MicroMasters program in Statistics and Data Science is bringing the quality, rigor, and structure of a master's-level, residential program in data science at MIT to a wider audience around the world, and at a very accessible price, so people can learn anywhere they are while keeping their day jobs." In all, seven universities will be accepting the new MicroMasters Statistics and Data Science (SDS) credential towards a master's degree, including the Rochester Institute of Technology (United States), Doane University (United States), Galileo University (Guatemala), Reykjavik University (Iceland), Curtin University (Australia), Deakin University (Australia), and RMIT University (Australia).

MIT to Launch Online Micromasters in Data Science -- Campus Technology

#artificialintelligence

The Statistics and Data Science Center (SDSC) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is launching a new online micromasters in statistics and data science. Currently under development by MIT faculty, the program will be available through edX in the fall and will feature a curriculum covering foundational knowledge of data science's methods and tools, in-depth coverage of probability and statistics and opportunities to experiment with data analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms. "The demand for data scientists is growing rapidly," said Krishna Rajagopal, dean for digital learning, in a prepared statement. "This new program increases the supply of professionals who are masters of the data science of today, and who have the foundational understanding needed to keep on top of the data science of tomorrow." MIT's micromasters programs are open to anyone who wants to enroll with no application process.
