X's Grok AI assistant is now a standalone app

Engadget

Grok, the AI assistant that's for some reason baked into X, is now available as a standalone app. Like the version that exists as a tab on the social media platform, the Grok app can be used to generate images, summarize text and answer questions, with a conversational tone xAI, the AI assistant's creator, calls "humorous and engaging." The app was first tested with a limited set of users in December 2024, right around the same time X debuted a free tier of Grok that's available to anyone. Prior to that, you needed to pay at least 8 a month for X Premium to have the privilege of using the AI. The limitations of that free access -- 10 requests every two hours, three image analysis request per day -- may also apply to the Grok app.

#artificialintelligence

ON1 has announced ON1 Resize AI, a new application that leverages the power of artificial intelligence to produce higher-quality, sharper photo enlargements than ON1's previous resizing software, including ON1 Resize, which is powered by Genuine Fractals. ON1 calls Resize AI'the biggest improvement in resize history.' ON1 Resize AI, which is available as standalone software or as a plugin, uses machine learning technology to recreate the details in your image that typically get lost during enlargement. When enlarging photos in other applications, the software uses interpolation to duplicate existing pixels to create the larger final image. In the demo video below, ON1 shows off its new Resize AI software and how its AI-based approach compares to traditional interpolation, including a bicubic interpolation method used to enlarge images in most photo apps, including Photoshop.

Google's Lens AI camera is now a standalone app

Engadget

Google has made good on its promise to release a standalone Lens app in the Play Store. The feature is already integrated on most Android phones, and the app doesn't come with any new features, so really it just serves as a quick launch for the platform. It's only available on devices with Marshmallow and above, and already many users are reporting that it's not working properly on some devices, but hey, it's Lens. The feature, which lets you identify artwork, landmarks and even dogs, hasn't always lived up to its promise as a computer vision platform. However, Google has recently launched a load of cool new Lens features, such as text integration and Style Match, so at least the separate app means that everyone will be able to play with them.

Microsoft's intelligent assistant, Cortana, is coming to iOS and Android devices, according to a Reuters report published today. But don't expect Siri to step aside right away. The Reuters report, based on interviews with Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research, and unnamed sources, is frustratingly vague about the timeframe for the appearance of Cortana in standalone apps on non-Windows platforms. Horvitz told Reuters that technology from an artificial intelligence project codenamed Einstein, "will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame." The standalone apps for iOS and Android are due "later," according to Reuters.
