Foundation Models for Education: Promises and Prospects
Xu, Tianlong, Tong, Richard, Liang, Jing, Fan, Xing, Li, Haoyang, Wen, Qingsong
With the advent of foundation models like ChatGPT, educators are excited about the transformative role that AI might play in propelling the next education revolution. The developing speed and the profound impact of foundation models in various industries force us to think deeply about the changes they will make to education, a domain that is critically important for the future of humans. In this paper, we discuss the strengths of foundation models, such as personalized learning, education inequality, and reasoning capabilities, as well as the development of agent architecture tailored for education, which integrates AI agents with pedagogical frameworks to create adaptive learning environments. Furthermore, we highlight the risks and opportunities of AI overreliance and creativity. Lastly, we envision a future where foundation models in education harmonize human and AI capabilities, fostering a dynamic, inclusive, and adaptive educational ecosystem.

Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity -- An Interview with Squirrel AI's Richard Tong
The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and Squirrel AI Learning announced the establishment of a new $1M annual award for societal benefits of AI. The award will be sponsored by Squirrel AI Learning as part of its mission to promote the use of artificial intelligence with lasting positive effects for society. The new Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity was announced jointly by Derek Haoyang Li, Founder and Chairman of Squirrel AI Learning, and Yolanda Gil, President of AAAI, at the 2019 conference for AI for adaptive Education (AIAED) in Beijing. Established in 2014, Squirrel AI Learning Intelligent Adaptive Education by Yixue Group is the first artificial intelligence company in China to apply AI-powered adaptive learning technology to K12 education. Squirrel AI Learning products use a model that combines artificial intelligence and human coaches to provide students with access to individualized and affordable high-quality education. Although the focus of Squirrel AI Learning is on education, Li insisted that the award will recognize AI innovations across all disciplines. The establishment of this award aims to inspire the AI community and draw attention to AI that can benefit humanity. This new international award will recognize significant contributions in the field of artificial intelligence with profound societal impact that have generated otherwise unattainable value for humanity. The award nomination and selection process will be designed by a committee led by AAAI that will include representatives from international organizations with relevant expertise that will be designated by Squirrel AI Learning.

AI's Communication Upsides
Artificial intelligence has a bad rap. Facial recognition algorithms -- like those used by law enforcement agencies around the country -- encourage racism. Digital assistants, such as Siri and Alexa, make children ruder. Predictive algorithms, like those employed by Facebook, narrow our perspectives. Meanwhile, language translators, including Google Translate, are said to hinder meaningful emotional connection.

"Father of Machine Learning", the Chief AI Scientist of Squirrel AI Learning, Tom Mitchell Delivered an Opening Speech at the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference(WAIC): AI for a Brighter World!
SHANGHAI, China, Sept. 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On August 29th, with the theme of "Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Possibilities", the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), co-sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Internet Information Office, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Shanghai Municipal People's Government, was solemnly held in Shanghai. More than 500 top universities, international organizations and the world's most influential scientists, entrepreneurs and investors in the field of artificial intelligence gathered in Shanghai. Turing Award winners Raj Reddy and Manuel Blum, former Dean of the School of Computer Science at CMU & Chief AI Scientist of Squirrel AI Learning Tom Mitchell, Nobel Prize winner George Smoot, "Father of Machine Learning", Finn E. Kydland, Swiss AI Lab IDSIA Scientific Director Jürgen Schmidhuber Co-founder and CEO of Tesla Elon Musk, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Tencent Pony (Huateng) Ma, Co-chairman of the United Nations High-level Group on Digital Cooperation Jack Ma etc., delivered brilliant speeches and conversations respectively. In the top-leader conversation session, Elon Musk, Co-founder and CEO of Tesla, conducted an in-depth conversation with Jack Ma, Co-chairman of the United Nations High-level Group on Digital Cooperation. When it comes to education, Musk said, "The lecture is the worst because it's too slow. It's hard to make fewer mistakes for us in predicting the future, but you have to try first, and then to adjust it according to the errors you have predicted before."

Squirrel AI Learning Present at Top AI Summit RE-WORK Deep Learning
Based on its core scientist team's top-level R&D strength, as well as technological innovation and breakthroughs, Squirrel AI Learning started holding four "man-machine competitions" in Zhengzhou, Chengdu and Dongying in October 2017 in a bid to identify any difference between its adaptive learning system and human teaching. Dr. Kalns demonstrated to the RE-WORK audience the results of the four competitions: surprisingly, machine teaching outperformed human teaching in all the four competitions. Taking the fourth competition, which unfolded in one hundred cities, as an example, students at the same intellectual level were divided into two groups and received human teaching and Squirrel AI Learning respectively. Every student in the machine teaching group learned 42 knowledge points on the average, while every student in the human teaching learned 28 knowledge points on the average; in terms of average scoring in the core part of the competition, the students in the AI teaching group had their scores increased by 5.4 on the average, while the students in the human teaching group just had their scores increased by 0.7 on the average, suggesting that machine teaching enabled students to take a firmer grasp of knowledge points than human teaching and improved the learning efficiency more significantly than human teaching. According to the results, Squirrel AI Learning is basically the same as or better than individualized human teaching.

Can AI Powered Education Close The Global Gender Gap?
Education is one of the most powerful predictors of future success that human society has at its disposal. How we gather, process, and disseminate knowledge to each successive generation impacts not just individual success, but a host of other related factors such as economic growth, political empowerment, and technological innovation. It is no secret that access to more effective education for individual students is a key factor in the overall betterment of society – and to women's role in society. I've long been a proponent of better education for women – from my early career days working for CARE, to becoming the Chief Strategy Officer of Top Scholar, contributing to the book "Innovating Women" and to founding a non-profit to help the disadvantaged attain better education. Recently, I've been looking around globally for innovative solutions that can leapfrog women's education forward.
