Northern India's elusive snow leopards get their close up

Popular Science

Adapted to live in some of our planet's most inhospitable mountainous regions, snow leopards (Panthera uncia) are the ultimate mountain climbers and an iconic big cat. A recent camera trapping study found that India is home to the most dense population of the black and white carnivores on Earth and most live in a remote northern region of the subcontinent. Here, they also appear to co-exist alongside rural communities, where they are respected by local human populations. The findings are detailed in a study published May 7 in the open-access journal PLOS One. Snow leopards are found in mountainous regions across 12 Asian countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

'We need to come together': British artists team up to fight AI image-generating software

The Guardian

Since the emergence of Midjourney and other image generators, artists have been watching and wondering whether AI is a great opportunity or an existential threat. Now, after a list of 16,000 names emerged of artists whose work Midjourney had allegedly used to train its AI – including Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread, Tracey Emin, David Hockney and Anish Kapoor – the art world has issued a call to arms against the technologists. British artists have contacted US lawyers to discuss joining a class action against Midjourney and other AI firms, while others have told the Observer that they may bring their own legal action in the UK. "What we need to do is come together," said Tim Flach, president of the Association of Photographers and an internationally acclaimed photographer whose name is on the list. "This public showing of this list of names is a great catalyst for artists to come together and challenge it. I personally would be up for doing that."

We can use Bing on Spark to quickly create our own machine learning datasets featuring anything we can find online. To create a custom snow leopard dataset takes only two distributed queries. The first query creates the "positive class" by pulling the first 80 pages of the "snow leopard" image results. The second query creates the "negative class" to compare our leopards against. We can perform this search in two different ways, and we plan to explore them both in upcoming posts.

Artificial Intelligence facing large skills shortage, says Microsoft - The Financial Express

The fast-emerging field of Artificial Intelligence, which has suddenly caught the attention of the IT industry and the governments across the world, is facing a large skills shortage, a top Microsoft official has said. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also facing the challenge of appropriate use of data, group programme manager of Microsoft Learning Matt Winkler told PTI. "There is a pretty large skills shortage. Lots of folks are talking about it (AI). A lot of folks are very, very excited about it and then they want to go and make that real. And when they go to make that real, there's a really large skills shortage," Winkler said.

How snow leopard selfies and AI can help save the species from extinction Transform

Koustubh Sharma is what you could call a cat scientist with a daunting task, as a wildlife biologist studying one of the world's most magnificent, fluffy-tailed and elusive big cats: snow leopards. Based in Kyrgyzstan, Sharma spends a lot of time trying to solve the riddle of how to study the hard-to-study, threatened species. The alpine cats live in frigid, barren landscapes; roam hundreds of miles and are so adept at solitude that they're dubbed "ghosts of the mountain." In the nearly 11 years that Sharma has studied snow leopards in the highlands of Central Asia, he has seen the thick-furred, rosette-marked feline only twice. His one close encounter was with a large male with a scarred face in southern Mongolia, while standing on a mountain ledge near a freshly killed ibex, a favorite meal for snow leopards.

First look of Azure Machine Learning : Azure Machine Learning part II

@machinelearnbot

In my last post, I have explained very basic information for Machine learning and I also explained the development life cycle for a Machine learning project. In this post, I will explain some frequent issues during the Machine Learning development and how you can overcome using Azure Machine Learning along with some basic Data cleansing task using Azure Machine Learning. In the Machine learning workflow, there is, sometimes, friction in the hand over between Data scientist and Operations. Thus Data scientist loses visibility in the model performance due to that. It is an Azure service which consists of libraries like Microsoft ML Spark libraries and tools like Azure Workbench and these work together with the IDEs like Visual Studio Code, PyCharm, Jupyter etc and third-party libraries like TensorFlow, TLC, CNTK etc.

Announcing tools for the AI-driven digital transformation

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most disruptive forces behind the digital transformation of business. Today, at Microsoft Ignite 2017, as we engage in conversations about digital transformation with over 25,000 customers and partners, I am pleased to share some of our latest and most exciting innovations in AI development platforms. These announcements – which span Azure Machine Learning (AML), new Visual Studio tools for AI, Cognitive Services and new enterprise AI solutions – demonstrate our mission to bring AI to every developer and every organization on the planet, and to help businesses augment human ingenuity in unique and differentiated ways. Today we are announcing a set of powerful new capabilities in AML for developers to exploit big data, GPUs, data wrangling and container based model deployment. Let me tell you more about these below and for a deep dive please review this AML blog. The AML Workbench is a cross-platform client application that runs on Windows and Mac and serves as a control panel for your development lifecycle.
