Time-Based Use Rates and Whole-Home Battery Backups Combine

WIRED

Power companies are pushing aggressive time-based use pricing. Here's how a regular consumer can benefit. I like to keep my home at a cool and comfortable 68 degrees year-round. This preference would be fine if I lived near the Pacific Ocean, or in a small home, or in a newer home that's insulated with modern mineral wool instead of tissue paper and horsehair. I, however, live in a 2,000-plus-square-foot home built in 1906.

The best smart dimmer switches of 2025

PCWorld

If you're looking for something with more elegance and sophistication, however, you should replace the switches in your walls. Besides, the most common drawback of relying on smart bulbs with conventional switches is that someone inevitably turns the switch off. Your expensive smart bulb is now a dumb bulb that can't be controlled with voice commands or be included in any lighting automations you've set up. Don't worry, it's an easy DIY project. Be aware, however, that mostโ€“but certainly not allโ€“smart controls depend on the presence of a neutral wire in the box.

Eve's Motion Sensor Finally Made My Home Feel 'Smart'

WIRED

My progress toward a truly "smart" home has been painfully slow. I'm sick of unreliable voice commands, flaky smart switches, and poorly designed apps. Where's the seamless experience that was promised? As my wife often points out, if it's not easier than flicking the regular old switch or drawing the curtains yourself, it is not an improvement. Smart home automation dangles the prospect of convenience but rarely delivers.

Hexabitz Home Automation

Smart home applications have been growing and companies keep developing ideas to make these applications more appealing to customers. It is still an open market and a good environment for more creation and development. Our team is aiming to participate in that industry by developing new solutions and providing more convenience to users. Our project uses Hexabitz modules for our hardware circuit. Hexabitz has been developing various modules that can be integrated together to build a complete PCB (printed circuit board) that can be programmed and controlled using software platforms.

Sinopรฉ Zigbee dimmer switch review: Smart lighting from the Great White North

PCWorld

Headquartered in Quebec, Canada, Sinopรฉ Technologies might be less familiar than some other smart-home brands, but we've reviewed several of the company's products and found a lot to like. Today, we'll take a look at its new Zigbee smart dimmer switch (model DM2500ZB), and its new smart home hub, the GT130 gateway. These two products are part of a new family of Zigbee 3.0-based products that Sinopรฉ launched this spring, a collection that also includes a smart in-wall outlet, a smart switch, and updated smart thermostats. With its embrace of the Zigbee smart home protocol, Sinopรฉ is relegating its proprietary smart home family--the Mi-Wi series, which included the GT125 gateway--to "legacy" status. Now when you buy a DIY Sinopรฉ smart home product, you can control it with the company's own GT130 gateway or with any other Zigbee-based smart home hub, including Samsung SmartThings or any of the Amazon Echo smart speakers and displays that are equipped with Zigbee radios.

The best LED floodlights you can buy in 2019

#artificialintelligence

Overhead BR30 (or bulging reflector) floodlights in recessed lighting setups keep plenty of homes lit. If you're looking to upgrade wide beam light bulbs like those, you'll almost certainly want to go with an LED over a fluorescent model or incandescent bulbs. You'll find plenty of picks in your local lighting aisle that are bright, dimmable, efficient, durable and as affordable as ever. And with the most promising lifespan that lasts years or even decades, it'll be a long while before you have to break out the ladder again. So which of these new options is the right one for you?

The Leviton Decora Smart Switch integrates with Apple HomeKit to control lights, ceiling fans, and other compatible products. The Leviton Decora Smart HomeKit Switch works over WiFi and packs a special chip that makes it compatible with Apple HomeKit. It connects to an app called Leviton Decora Smart Home that is only available for iPhone. To set up the switch, Apple HomeKit uses special barcodes that you scan with your phone. We preferred the Decora Smart Home app over the My Leviton app, finding it to be more polished and intuitive.

TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch, Dimmer HS220 review: A solid competitor in the in-wall dimmer space

PCWorld

I'll cut to the chase: TP-Link's Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch Dimmer (model HS220) is an in-wall switch that looks good and works well. Let's start with the good looks, as I must say I really like what TP-Link has done to the face of this devicer. A large rocker switch occupies the bulk of the real estate. A quick tap turns the light on or off, gradually brightening or dimming the connected bulbs. A tap-and-hold immediately takes the bulb to your preset maximum brightness or quickly shuts it off.

Ecobee Switch review: This powerful smart light switch is an Amazon Echo in disguise

PCWorld

Amazon's Alexa two-way voice technology has been embedded in clock radios, thermostats, televisions, and even lamps. With the Ecobee Switch, it now comes to the humble light switch. There are dozens of those. This is a switch with a legit Alexa hub built into it, blue light and everything. Speak into the embedded microphone, and your light switch can do just about anything that your standalone Echo device can do.

The best plug-in smart outlet

This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter, reviews for the real world. When readers choose to buy Wirecutter's independently chosen editorial picks, it may earn affiliate commissions that support its work. After spending over 22 hours plugging in and unplugging lights and other small appliances and turning them on and off using various apps (and by barking orders at Siri and Alexa when we could), we found that the Belkin WeMo Mini is the best smart-switch outlet adapter for people who want to add smart control to their existing outlets. It packs most of the same features as our previous pick, the WeMo Insight, into a smaller size, and it's less expensive. It also plays nicely with both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets and integrates easily with popular smart-home protocols and devices.
