Sam Altman says AI has entered 'singularity': Should we be worried?

Al Jazeera

Sam Altman says AI has entered'singularity': Should we be worried? How is the US tech industry regulated? The 2014 US film Transcendence follows a dying scientist who uploads his mind to a supercomputer and becomes a near omnipotent intelligence. A year later, Ex Machina told the story of a humanoid robot who outsmarts her human handlers and escapes into the wider world. Both of these films, like many others from the realm of science fiction, referred to what is known as "the singularity", a moment in time when technology, particularly AI, surpasses human intelligence and becomes increasingly difficult to control.

What is the AI Kill Switch Act proposed in the US and how will it work?

Al Jazeera

What is the AI Kill Switch Act proposed in the US and how will it work? Two members of the United States Congress have introduced bipartisan legislation that would require developers of the country's most powerful artificial intelligence systems to build in a "kill switch", allowing advanced AI models to be slowed, suspended or shut down if they pose a catastrophic risk. The proposed AI Kill Switch Act, introduced on Thursday by Democratic Representative Ted Lieu and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran, would give the US government authority to order companies developing advanced AI systems to intervene if their models escape human control or threaten human life, critical infrastructure or the economy. The disclosure has intensified debate over whether increasingly powerful AI systems require stronger safeguards. "Congress must act quickly to ensure humans remain able to say stop, no matter how powerful these systems become," said Brendan Steinhauser, head of the Alliance for Secure AI.

Trump expands voluntary pledge to blunt AI-driven utility bill surges

Al Jazeera

Trump's 50 percent Canada tariffs: What to know US President Donald Trump's administration has said it will expand a voluntary pledge seeking to shield consumers from the energy costs of the rapid expansion of data centres, mostly used by artificial intelligence companies. The White House announced on Thursday that it would add state governors and electricity companies to the agreement, first announced with tech and AI firms in March. But the US administration stopped short of any enforceable protections. The pledge is a "public commitment that hyperscalers, AI companies, and the utilities and data-center developers behind them will build, bring, or buy every kilowatt their facilities need -- and cover every dollar of the infrastructure that delivers it". It says consumers would not foot the bill for AI's energy needs.
