SkillNet-X: A Multilingual Multitask Model with Sparsely Activated Skills

Traditional multitask learning methods basically can only exploit common knowledge in task- or language-wise, which lose either cross-language or cross-task knowledge. This paper proposes a general multilingual multitask model, named SkillNet-X, which enables a single model to tackle many different tasks from different languages. To this end, we define several language-specific skills and task-specific skills, each of which corresponds to a skill module. SkillNet-X sparsely activates parts of the skill modules which are relevant either to the target task or the target language. Acting as knowledge transit hubs, skill modules are capable of absorbing task-related knowledge and language-related knowledge consecutively. Based on Transformer, we modify the multi-head attention layer and the feed forward network layer to accommodate skill modules. We evaluate SkillNet-X on eleven natural language understanding datasets in four languages. Results show that SkillNet-X performs better than task-specific baselines and two multitask learning baselines (i.e., dense joint model and Mixture-of-Experts model). Furthermore, skill pre-training further improves the performance of SkillNet-X on almost all datasets. To investigate the generalization of our model, we conduct experiments on two new tasks and find that SkillNet-X significantly outperforms baselines.
Reusable neural skill embeddings for vision-guided whole body movement and object manipulation

Both in simulation settings and robotics, there is an ambition to produce flexible control systems that can enable complex bodies to perform dynamic locomotion and natural object manipulation. In previous work, we developed a framework to train locomotor skills and reuse these skills for whole-body visuomotor tasks. Here, we extend this line of work to tasks involving whole body movement as well as visually guided manipulation of objects. This setting poses novel challenges in terms of task specification, exploration, and generalization. We develop an integrated approach consisting of a flexible motor primitive module, demonstrations, an instructed training regime as well as curricula in the form of task variations. We demonstrate the utility of our approach for solving challenging whole body tasks that require joint locomotion and manipulation, and characterize its behavioral robustness. Neural Arithmetic Expression Calculator

This paper presents a pure neural solver for arithmetic expression calculation (AEC) problem. Previous work utilizes the powerful capabilities of deep neural networks and attempts to build an end-to-end model to solve this problem. However, most of these methods can only deal with the additive operations. It is still a challenging problem to solve the complex expression calculation problem, which includes the adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and bracketing operations. In this work, we regard the arithmetic expression calculation as a hierarchical reinforcement learning problem. An arithmetic operation is decomposed into a series of sub-tasks, and each sub-task is dealt with by a skill module. The skill module could be a basic module performing elementary operations, or interactive module performing complex operations by invoking other skill models. With curriculum learning, our model can deal with a complex arithmetic expression calculation with the deep hierarchical structure of skill models. Experiments show that our model significantly outperforms the previous models for arithmetic expression calculation.
