Apple reportedly also spoke to Nissan about building a self-driving EV

Engadget

After talks broke off between Hyundai and Apple about a partnership on a rumored self-driving EV, Hyundai said it believed that "Apple is in discussion with a variety of global automakers, including Hyundai Motors." One of those other automakers is reportedly Nissan, which held talks with Apple "in recent months," according to the Financial Times. However, the discussions are "no longer active," according to the report. In a statement to Reuters, Nissan said that "we are not in talks with Apple," confirming that if any discussions did happen, they have since ceased. "However, Nissan is always open to exploring collaborations and partnerships to accelerate industry transformation," the Nissan spokesperson added.

Renault's concept EV drove me at 80MPH while I wore a VR headset

Do you see an image yet?" he asks me. Ahh, yes, now I see it," I reply nervously. A minute ago I was on a real road, but now I'm rolling down a fake forested highway in a simulation created by Ubisoft. Meanwhile, Renault's Level 4 autonomous system has taken the piloting chores (with a professional, joystick-equipped driver backing it up in the passenger seat). It's a bizarre experience, but I don't feel sick, because the Symbioz is transmitting real road motion to the headset.

VW aims to move past scandals with another self-driving EV

Engadget

Volkswagen really, really wants to prove that it's moving past its diesel emissions scandal, and to that end it's unveiling yet another electric car concept following the I.D. and I.D. Buzz. This third model will be VW's first crossover EV, blending a "four-door coupé" with an SUV. You'll get the full scoop on the third I.D. at Auto Shanghai, which kicks off April 19th. As with the other prototypes, the CUV is a statement of purpose. VW wants to fully embrace EVs by 2020 (not to mention autonomous driving by 2025), and that means having a whole stable of mainstream models rather than one or two niche cars.

Renault-Nissan developing a fleet of self-driving EVs

Engadget

French people love to drive, but with private radar companies set to give out way more speeding tickets, they may be willing to let machines take the wheel. Luckily, the Renault-Nissan Alliance has teamed with a company called Transdev to develop a fleet of self-driving vehicles "for future public and on-demand transportation," it said in a press release. The project will kick off with autonomous field testing of Europe's most popular EV, the 250-mile-range Renault Zoe. Transdev, which will supply the self-driving and logistics tech, recently launched what it claims is the "world's first" fully autonomous fleet to run on an industrial site. Its systems are used on the "Navya Arma" vehicles, shuttling employees around EDF nuclear power stations every five minutes.
