Russia threatened to shoot down French surveillance craft over Black Sea, officials say
Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Russian forces threatened to shoot down a French surveillance aircraft patrolling in international airspace over the Black Sea, a signal of increasingly aggressive behavior from Moscow as its invasion of Ukraine struggles to make headway, French defense officials said Thursday. "A Russian air traffic control system threatened to shoot down French aircraft in the Black Sea when we were in a free international zone where we patrol," the French defense minister, Sébastien Lecornu, said on RTL radio. A French military spokesman, Col. Pierre Gaudillière, said Lecornu was referring to an incident in mid-November that involved one of France's four giant Airborne Warning and Control System, or AWACS, surveillance aircraft that was flying over international waters in the Black Sea.

French surveillance flights keep close watch on Russia and Ukraine, drawing boundary in European skies
A huge fire tore through an online retailer's warehouse in St. Petersburg Saturday with video showing intense flames and thick black smoke rising into the sky (CREDIT: Reuters). Seen from up here, in the cockpit of a French air force surveillance plane flying over neighboring Romania, the snow-dusted landscapes look deceptively peaceful. The dead from Russia's war, the shattered Ukrainian towns and mangled battlefields, aren't visible to the naked eye through the clouds. But French military technicians riding farther back in the aircraft, monitoring screens that display the word "secret" when idle, have a far more penetrating view. With a powerful radar that rotates six times every minute on the fuselage and a bellyful of surveillance gear, the plane can spot missile launches, airborne bombing runs and other military activity in the conflict.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 660
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 42 drones and six missiles, mostly targeting the southern Odesa region. Air defence systems destroyed most of the Iranian-made Shahed drones but 11 people were injured by falling debris, which also damaged buildings and warehouses. The air force said Ukraine was also attacked by Russian fighter jets dropping Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. One missile was shot down over the Kyiv region, but another two hit the west of the capital where there is an air base. Kyiv regional governor Ruslan Kravchenko said no casualties were reported, or damage to critical and civilian infrastructure.

New video shows Russian fighter jets harassing American drones over Syria, US Air Force says
U.S. Air Forces Central released new video appearing to show Russian fighter jets harassing American drones over Syria on July 5. Information about where the incidents took place were not provided. The United States military released new aerial footage on Wednesday that showed Russian fighter jets flying dangerously close to several U.S. drones over Syria. U.S. Air Forces Central said the video of the incident shows Russian SU-35 fighters moving into the drone's flight path and setting off so-called parachute flares and forcing the MQ-9 Reapers to take evasive maneuvers. Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, commander of 9th Air Force in the Middle East, said three of the U.S. drones were operating over Syria, conducting a mission on the Islamic State terror group, when the Russian aircraft "began harassing the drones" after 10:30 a.m. "Russian military aircraft engaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior while interacting with U.S. aircraft in Syria," he said, describing the actions as threatening to the safety of the U.S. and Russian forces.

Russian fighter aircraft hold combat drills over Baltic Sea
Russia has started tactical fighter jet exercises over the Baltic Sea with the goal of testing readiness to perform combat and other special operations, the country's defence ministry has said, a day after Moscow said its jets had scrambled to intercept United Kingdom military planes over the Black Sea. "The main goal of the exercise is to test the readiness of the flight crew to perform combat and special tasks as intended," Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday. "The crews of the Su-27 [fighter jets] of the Baltic Fleet fired from airborne weapons at cruise missiles and mock enemy aircraft," the ministry announced on the Telegram messaging channel, adding that as well as improving skills, Russian fighter pilots are on "round-the-clock combat duty" guarding the air space of Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. Wedged between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast, Kaliningrad is Moscow's westernmost state and was part of Germany until the end of World War II. Given to the Soviet Union at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the enclave has roughly 1 million residents – mainly Russians but also a small number of Ukrainians, Poles and Lithuanians.

After drone clash, is direct Russia-US confrontation more likely?
Kyiv, Ukraine – It looked like a deliberate manoeuvre by a skilled pilot that led to the first direct military clash between the United States and Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine. Two Russian fighter jets approached a US drone flying in the cloudless, azure sky over international waters in the Black Sea on Tuesday morning. One of the Russian Su-27s released a stream of jet fuel on the MQ-9 Reaper drone, causing its cameras to shut off. Then the Su-27 hit the Reaper's propeller, causing it to tumble into the sea, the Pentagon said. It said the Reaper was a "reconnaissance drone" and carried no arms, although the unmanned aircraft with a wingspan of 26 metres (85 feet) was designed as a "hunter-killer" armed with laser-guided bombs and missiles.

Pentagon says its 'highly unlikely' Russia will find anything useful if it recovers US drone from Black Sea
It is "highly unlikely" Russia will find anything useful if it manages to recover a U.S. surveillance drone from the deep waters of the Black Sea where it crashed earlier this week after colliding with a Russian fighter jet, the Pentagon said Thursday. Gen. Pat Ryder comes amid reports that Russia was making an effort to recover the MQ-9 Reaper drone's debris. Ryder reiterated Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley's assertion that no sensitive material was compromised in the drone incident. "We do have indications that Russia's likely making an effort to try to recovery MQ-9 debris," Ryder said. "However, we assess it's very unlikely that they would be able to recovery anything useful, given a couple of factors."

Gen. Mark Milley 'not sure yet' if Russian fighter jet's collision with US drone was 'intentional'
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said during a briefing on Wednesday that the collision of a Russian jet with a U.S. drone follows a "pattern" of unsafe and risky behavior from Russia. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said during a briefing on Wednesday that America doesn't seek "armed conflict" with Russia after the collision of a Russian jet and a U.S. drone On Tuesday, a Russian Su-27 fighter plane collided with a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone while traveling over the Black Sea, a U.S. defense official told Fox News. The collision occurred in international airspace while over international waters, with the jet in question being one of two Su-27s flying in tandem. The drone's propeller was damaged, forcing it to be ditched in the Black Sea west of Crimea, the defense official said. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin described the incident as a continuation of risky behavior from Russia during Tuesday's press briefing.

Russia to try recovering downed US drone, as US vows to 'protect our equities'
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday said the U.S. will not stop flights in international airspace after a Russian fighter jet clipped a U.S. drone propeller, causing a crash into the Black Sea. A race between the U.S. and Russia is underway to secure the debris of the drone that crashed into the Black Sea. Russian officials announced Wednesday that operations were underway to collect the debris of the downed U.S. drone -- the country has denied responsibility for the incident. An MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) flies by during a training mission at Creech Air Force Base on Nov. 17, 2015, in Indian Springs, Nevada. U.S. officials say a Russian fighter jet clipped the U.S. drone's propeller while traveling in international airspace, causing the crash.

GOP senator 'p---ed off' by Russia forcing down US drone: 'We cannot allow that to happen'
Republican Sen. Mike Rounds told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin Tuesday at a Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute summit that he is angered by Russian fighter jet colliding with a U.S. drone over international waters. Republican Sen. Mike Rounds described himself as "p---ed off" following the reported collision of a Russian fighter jet with a U.S. military drone. U.S. military command alleged Tuesday that a Russian fighter jet dumped fuel on a U.S. drone over the Black Sea, clipped the drone's propeller and forced it into the water. Asked by Fox News' Jennifer Griffin for his feelings on the matter, Rounds. R-S.D., said he was "p---ed off."
