Warning that robot lawnmowers are killing hedgehogs: Scientists propose must-have garden gadgets come with 'safety certificates'
Hedgehogs are increasingly being killed and injured from encounters with robot lawnmowers which have few safety features to protect wildlife, according to Oxford University scientists. Researchers conducted a series of tests with the mowers, the latest must-have garden gadget, with a view to create a'hedgehog friendly' certification so gardeners need not fear any prickly casualties when they trim the grass. To ensure no harm was caused to living hedgehogs, scientists used rubber'crash test hedgehogs' instead to see if the robot mower would turn away on encountering one of Mrs Tiggywinkle's tribe on the lawn. Hedgehogs are already in serious decline, with reasons including habitat loss, road traffic accidents, intensive agriculture, and injuries from dog bites and garden strimmers. But now mowers are adding to the threats.
Robotic lawnmowers, home saunas, grills and more: DIY expert reveals favorite backyard products
DIY expert Chip Wade shows'Fox & Friends Weekend' the finishing touches on his Georgia home. DIY expert Chip Wade showed off some of the finishing touches he put on his home in Chatsworth, Georgia. For a "Fox & Friends Weekend" segment on July 22, Wade and his family were in their brand new backyard at their home in the mountains of Georgia. Over the past year, Wade has been building a house with the help of 3D rendering. "And now he's finished," said co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy.
This Car's Provenance Is Even Stranger Than Its Looks - Global Circulate
Thanks to a video posted by Edd China on YouTube we get a glimpse at one of the strangest custom cars ever built. This unique build was commissioned by a robotic lawn mower company called Friendly Robotics to create a drivable 3 to 1 replica of one of their robotic lawnmowers. The resulting build was a striking custom vehicle that was sure to draw interest from onlookers and help advertise the use of robotic lawnmowers. Friendly Robotics wanted to drum up some interest in their robotic lawn mower offerings. They took a page right from the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile book and decided to reach out to the team at Cummfy Banana to build a drivable robotic lawn mowermobile.
Dead hedgehogs will be placed in front of robotic lawnmowers
The bodies of hedgehogs who died of natural causes are going to be placed in front of robotic lawnmowers to find out if they are responsible for a spate of injuries. A study by the University of Oxford and others follows an increase in complaints by members of the public claiming automatic mowers are injuring the mammals. Sensors on the devices are supposed to detect any creatures that are in their path as they mow the lawn and move around them to avoid causing harm or even death. People have taken to social media and contacted animal shelters to report mutilated hedgehogs and are blaming the robots for their injuries - but little evidence exists. Hedgehog expert Dr Sophie Lund Rasmussen said she will use creatures that died of natural causes, place them in the garden and see if electric lawnmowers spot them.

Honda is bringing its robotic lawnmower to the US
Robots are slowly making their way into the workforce, but there is one job humans may not mind these machines taking over – mowing the lawn. Honda has unveiled an autonomous robotic lawnmower that uses electric motors, sensors and three different programmable cutting patterns to take care of one of life's most tedious chores. Called Miimo, the robot is equipped with a minicomputer and is capable of recharging itself – when it hits less than 30 percent battery life, it heads back to its charging dock, reloads and returns to where it left off to finish the task. Both are equipped with three cutting modes that allow consumers to customize the look of their lawn.
