Two fields that are rapidly evolving, advancing and holding infinite promise for the future of humanity are robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). From the simplest of tasks to the most complex and demanding in our everyday lives, advances in robotics and AI have made it possible to create machines that can perform tasks with incredible speed and accuracy. With these two technologies beginning to converge, is the new age upon us in which robots that are more intelligent and capable than ever before are the future of humans? Although robotics and AI have always been in the conversation, the last two decades have seen a rapid rise in their development and application. Fear of the misconception that these machines will take over our jobs has been allayed.


ROBOTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DEFENCE SECTOR

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence till now have been used mainly for commercial work and yet to dominate defence sector in India. There is a huge potential in this segment and newly formed Task-Force on Artificial Intelligence by Indian government is a step towards economic transformation. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is combination of technology and cognitive intelligence for simulation, processing of information and knowledge to build capability in a machine to imitate human behaviour. It is a transformative technology that has tremendous applications in the social, economic and military fields. Till some time back we had robots operated by a human or through a set of programming to perform repetitive task.


Ethics in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

As robots are becoming increasingly intelligent and autonomous, from self-driving cars to assistive robots for vulnerable populations, important ethical questions inevitably emerge wherever and whenever such robots interact with humans and thereby impact human well-being. Questions that must be answered include whether such robots should be deployed in human societies in fairly unconstrained environments and what kinds of provisions are needed in robotic control systems to ensure that autonomous machines will not cause humans harms or at least minimize harm when it cannot be avoided. The goal of this specialty is to provide the first interdisciplinary forum for philosophers, psychologists, legal experts, AI researchers and roboticists to disseminate their work specifically targeting the ethical aspects of autonomous intelligent robots. Note that the conjunction of "AI and robotics" here indicates the journal's intended focus is on the ethics of intelligent autonomous robots, not the ethics of AI in general or the ethics of non-intelligent, non-autonomous machines. Examples of questions that we seek to address in this journal are: -- computational architectures for moral machines -- algorithms for moral reasoning, planning, and decision-making -- formal representations of moral principles in robots -- computational frameworks for robot ethics -- human perceptions and the social impact of moral machines -- legal aspects of developing and disseminating moral machines -- algorithms for learning and applying moral principles -- implications of robotic embodiment/physical presence in social space -- variance of ethical challenges across different contexts of human -robot interaction

A Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) spin-off, Inrobics Social Robotics, S.L.L., has developed a robotic device that provides an innovative motor and cognitive rehabilitation service that can be used at health centres as well as at home. Inrobics was created using research results from the University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The entrepreneurial team has developed a platform made up of four elements: a robot that interacts with the patient, an artificial intelligence system that uses a 3D sensor to control the robot, an application that can be used by health care staff to set up and track sessions, and a cloud-based storage system which contains information and analytics from all of the rehabilitation processes.
