Ring Stick Up Cam Battery review: Inexpensive and reliable wireless video surveillance, indoors and out
The Ring Stick Up Cam, now in its third generation, can be deployed indoors or out. It operates on battery power, which means you can deploy it just about anywhere your Wi-Fi network can reach, and it can be connected to an optional but inexpensive solar panel. It's virtually identical to the Ring Indoor Cam I reviewed a little more than a week ago, both in form factor and specs, but the Stick Up Cam's battery and weatherized enclosure adds $40 to the price. There are higher-quality indoor/outdoor, battery-powered, Wi-Fi security cameras on the market, but the Ring Stick Up Cam costs half as much as the Arlo Pro 3 that tops our list, and you'll need to buy that camera in a $500 two-pack that includes a smart hub (add-on Arlo cameras cost $200 each). There are major upsides to Arlo's product for sure, but they don't matter if you can't afford the product in the first place.
Ring Stick Up Cam Wired (2018) review: Ring finally has an indoor security camera
Ring's second-generation home security camera--the Ring Stick Up Cam Wired--can be deployed indoors or out (the first-gen model was strictly an outdoor camera). The company already makes some of our favorite outdoor cameras, and it has a promising new alarm system on the market. This camera is just as good. In TechHive's tests, we found its image quality to be among the best available, and its motion-sensing abilities are equal to or better than many competitors. A well-designed mount allows it to be aligned vertically on almost any surface, and the thoughtful addition of power over ethernet (PoE) support means you can easily install it in places with bad Wi-Fi and/or that are far from an electrical outlet.
Ring Spotlight Cam review: Intruders can't hide in darkness with this camera on watch
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 and Ring Stick Up Cam provide easy and effective ways to set up a pretty strong security perimeter around the outside of your home, but it could be made considerably stronger with the addition of its new Spotlight Cam. This outdoor camera/porch-light hybrid, illuminates and records video when when its motion sensor is tripped. Ideally suited for the darker nooks and on your property that are susceptible to breach after sundown, it comes in three models: Spotlight Cam Battery, Spotlight Cam Solar, and Spotlight Cam Wired ($199 each). I tested the Spotlight Cam Wired and it's a great option if you have easily accessible outdoor power outlets. The spotlight is provided by an LED light strips on either side of a 140-degree wide-angle lens, which activate when motion is detected.
Ring Stick Up Cam review: A companion camera for the Ring Video Doorbell
Ring Video Doorbell users who want to expand the security perimeter around their home have a ready option in the Ring Stick Up Cam (available for $179). This outdoor camera, clearly designed as a companion to the company's front-door sentinel, comes with customizable motion detection, two-way talk, and an assortment of installation possibilities. The top of the body houses a motion sensor and a 720p HD lens with an 80-degree field of view. The lens is flanked on either side by three infrared LEDs for night vision. As with the doorbell, a built-in mic and speaker let you talk with anyone who moseys up to the camera. "Stick up" implies, to me at least, a fairly informal installation, but that's not exactly the case here.
