Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima Inducted Into World Video Game Hall of Fame
The inductees debuted across decades, advancing technologies along the way and expanding not only the number of players, but the ages and interests of those at the controls, Hall of Fame authorities said in revealing the winners. The Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games of all types -- arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile. The Class of 2024 was selected by experts from among a field of 12 finalists that also included Elite, Guitar Hero, Metroid, Neopets, Tokimeki Memorial, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and You Don't Know Jack. The honor for Atari's Asteroids comes 45 years after its 1979 debut in arcades, where it was Atari's bestselling coin-operated game. The game's glowing space-themed graphics and sound effects made their way from more than 70,000 arcade units into millions of living rooms when a home version of Asteroids was made available on the Atari 2600.
Success of Fallout proves video game adaptations have gone mainstream
In the first few days of its release, Fallout – the Prime Video adaptation of the post-apocalyptic video game franchise – has become a hit with global audiences, shooting to the top of the UK chart and ranking among Prime's top three most-watched titles ever. On Friday, just a week after the show debuted in more than 240 countries and territories, Amazon announced it had renewed it for a second season. "The bar was high for lovers of this iconic video game and so far we seem to have exceeded their expectations, while bringing in millions of new fans to the franchise," the streamer said. The success of the show, which is set 200 years after a nuclear armageddon and stars Ella Purnell, Kyle MacLachlan and Aaron Moten, demonstrates the extent to which video game adaptations have improved in recent years and finally pierced the mainstream. A slew of commercial and critical hits, including last year's HBO series The Last of Us – which won eight Emmys – and The Super Mario Bros Movie – which made 1.36bn ( 1.094bn) in the global box office – has led to market experts comparing them to Marvel adaptations, which have long been big moneymakers for studios.
em Fallout /em Is the Biggest Hit in Months. The Secret to Its Success? It Started With a Lousy Story.
There's a moment in the new hit Amazon Prime Video series Fallout where the sunny protagonist, having emerged from her underground commune into a postapocalyptic hellscape, tries to convince a bloodthirsty mutant to follow the Golden Rule, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I expected the mutant--or Ghoul, to be more precise--to shoot back some nihilistic platitude in return, maybe a slang-ified version of a Thomas Hobbes quote. Instead, we get a perfect line: "Yeah, well, the wasteland's got its own golden rule," he replies. "'Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time.'" That rejoinder distills what makes Fallout, both the video game series and its television adaptation, so great. After all, getting sidetracked by bullshit is what Fallout has always been about.

'I played video games with a voracious appetite': writer Carmen Maria Machado on being a lifelong gamer
In my first memory of the medium, I am standing behind Eric and he has black hair. His mother couldn't have watched me more than a handful of times in my childhood, but I can visualise the living room vestibule where we are standing as clearly as if it's my own house. It must be around 1993. I remember that Eric is playing Super Mario Bros, but only because my little brother's name is Mario and I make the connection with confusion. Eric offers to let me play, once, and I hold the controller like the alien object it is.

The 7 worst video game adaptations and why The Last of Us bucks trend
The TV show of the gaming hit The Last of Us has proved to be a streaming blockbuster for HBO, pulling in 7.5 million viewers for its fourth episode after four straight weeks of gains. But video game adaptations don't always work well - even when they're backed by the most extravagant budgets, hottest stars and based on the biggest hits from the gaming world. Paramount's Halo and Netflix's Resident Evil were canceled after just one season, while the 2005 film Doom received a 5.2 out of 10 on IMDB. The failures come down to creators using a different structure in their storytelling than what gamers love in the games, along with the lack of puzzle solving that players appreciate while in the virtual worlds. The Last of Us has become a mega-hit for maker HBO and has overcome the odds of failing video game adaptations.

Netflix's Resident Evil has already been canceled
Netflix's Resident Evil series has been canceled a little over a month after its initial debut, according to a report from Deadline. The streamer reportedly decided against renewing the series due to lackluster ratings and viewership. Like the many other Resident Evil adaptations, Netflix's live-action series attempts to put yet another spin on the video game franchise it's based on. The show, which was helmed by Supernatural's Andrew Dabb, flashes between two different timelines, centering around Umbrella executive Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick) and his two daughters (played by Tamara Smart and Siena Agudong). In our review of the series, my colleague Charles Pulliam-Moore notes that it "keeps things feeling fresh up to a point," but it's dragged down by a "predictable plot that ultimately suffers from being such a late entry in the modern-day zombie craze." Resident Evil made Netflix's top 10 list of its most-watched shows the week it debuted and the two weeks that followed, but largely fell off the map after that.

Netflix's em Resident Evil /em is Surprisingly Good. There's One Scene That Proves It.
As Netflix's profits have begun to wane, some business analysts have argued that, when compared to rivals like HBO Max or Amazon Prime, Netflix has a "quantity over quality" problem with its content. Critics have joined this bandwagon, turning on the streaming service's wide array of original material. This trend manifested itself most recently in the wake of the release of the television series Resident Evil, loosely based on the Capcom survival-horror video game from the 1990s. A week after its July 14th release, the show has been snubbed by critics, earning a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as absolutely savaged by viewers who rated the show on that website, leaving a bloodbath of one-star reviews and an "Audience Score" of 26%. Given the history of the Resident Evil movie franchise--six schlocky Milla Jovovich vehicles that contained, in total, exactly one memorable scene; one forgettable 2021 prequel--this kind of critical drubbing might be the expected outcome.

What to expect from this summer's big video game shows
It's June, and video game fans across the globe know what that means – it's not E3. The old, in-person gaming show has been canceled for the third year in a row, but this summer will still be filled with news and virtual events, thanks in large part to Canada's sweetheart Geoff Keighley. It all takes place in early June, which is like right now, so let's take a look at the schedule for Summer Game Fest and break down what to expect from the studios involved. Summer Game Fest is less a singular event and more a state of mind. It comprises a handful of virtual shows spread over 10 days, starting on June 2nd with the PlayStation State of Play stream.
Every Resident Evil game, ranked
The perfect Resident Evil game doesn't exist. The series, among the most consequential in gaming, has shifted its focus so often, a "Resident Evil fan" could be many things. One player's definition of a perfect Resident Evil game is another's mark of where the series went astray. Like the Zelda or Mario series, Resident Evil is due some credit for innovating and becoming an industry leader, even if it eventually began to borrow from its action-adventure peers. Still, there are plenty of ideas that persist through each game.
'Playable shows are the future': what Punchdrunk theatre learned from games
There is a head-scratching moment at the beginning of the popular farming simulator video game Stardew Valley, where you wonder, "What now?" Newly installed on your late grandfather's dilapidated farm, you're given no instructions on how to turn the business's fortunes or what to explore in the neighbouring town. This conundrum fills Felix Barrett with glee. As the founder and creative director of British theatre company Punchdrunk, he has spent 19 years turning warehouses into vast worlds that audiences must learn to explore alone. From Woyzeck to Faust, Punchdrunk transforms classic plays into sprawling, interactive experiences. The idea is this: traditional theatre shows are passive affairs where you watch a distant stage from the comfort of a chair - but a Punchdrunk show is active, mysterious, and places you inside a fiction you can touch, smell, and even taste.
