AI/ML - Residency Program, Health AI at Apple
Imagine what you could do here. At Apple, great ideas have a way of becoming great products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Combining groundbreaking machine learning techniques with next-generation hardware, our teams take user experiences to the next level. Apple's AI/ML residency is a year long program inviting experts in various fields to apply their own domain expertise to build revolutionary machine learning and AI empowered products and experiences. The residency will begin with several weeks of coursework focused on machine learning and deep learning, followed by a project with one of our global machine learning teams.
Apple launches AI/ML residency program to attract niche experts
As Apple's artificial language and machine learning initiatives continue to expand, its interest in attracting talent has grown -- a theme that's barely under the surface of the company's occasionally updated Machine Learning Research blog. Now Apple is openly seeking to recruit U.S. and European candidates with niche expertise for a yearlong AI/ML residency program, promising immersion and mentoring that will advance their careers. The goal is apparently to find people whose interests aren't necessarily AI/ML specific, then give them the knowledge and tools to apply machine learning and deep learning to their disciplines -- a process that will widen Apple's ability to solve users' problems in those disciplines. Apple says its ideal candidates would come from fields such as cognitive science, psychology, physics, robotics, public health, or computer graphics, but in any case should have programming proficiency and either a graduate degree or equivalent industry experience. Residencies are currently being offered in Cupertino, California; Seattle, Washington; Cambridge, U.K.; Zurich, and "various locations within Germany" for a summer 2021 start date, with assignment descriptions that vary between locations.

2020 AI Residency Guide
As global AI development and deployment continues, the demand for AI talents is growing faster than ever. A number of industry leaders and reputable institutions offer AI residency programs designed to help nurture promising AI talents. These present an excellent opportunity for young people interested in AI to gain valuable work experience and even make some pocket money. Synced has identified AI related 2020 residency programs that may be of interest to readers. Previously, tech leaders Uber and NVIDIA also offered year-long AI residency programs, but any programs for 2020 have yet to be announced.
Residency program for fourth-generation Japanese rarely used
A residency program that allows fourth-generation Japanese descendants living overseas to work in the country has been rarely used due to strict requirements such as language proficiency and age. Under the program introduced in July last year, only 43 people qualified as of June 17, compared with the annual cap of 4,000 set by the Immigration Services Agency. The agency has started discussions to ease the requirements in a bid to increase the number of qualified people. Before the program's introduction, fourth-generation Japanese descendants overseas permitted to stay in Japan were limited to unmarried and underage children of third-generation Japanese with permanent residency status. In addition, they needed to be living with their parents.
Facebook AI Research Residency Program
The Facebook AI Research (FAIR) Residency Program is a one-year research training program with Facebook's AI Research group, designed to give you hands-on experience of machine learning research. The program will pair you with a senior researcher or engineer in FAIR, who will act as your mentor. Together, you will pick a research problem of mutual interest and then devise new deep learning techniques to solve it. We also encourage collaborations beyond the assigned mentor. The research will be communicated to the academic community by submitting papers to top academic venues (NIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP etc.), as well as open-source code releases.
Research at Google
The Google AI Residency Program -- previously known as the Google Brain Residency Program -- is a 12-month research training role designed to jumpstart or advance your career in machine learning research. Residents will have the opportunity to work alongside distinguished scientists and engineers from various research teams. The Brain Residency Program was created in 2015 with the goal of training and supporting the next generation of deep learning researchers. With deep learning and other machine learning subfields fast becoming a critical area for a broad range of applications, people from a wide range of disciplines are beginning to realize the importance and impact of this area of research. With growing interest in the field, there is a corresponding need for researchers with hands-on experience in machine learning techniques and methodologies.
