Self-driving vehicles from overseas face ban in England and Wales

The remote driving of vehicles from overseas, such as for the delivery of rental cars, could be banned following a government-commissioned review. The review was carried out by the Law Commission of England and Wales, which recommended ministers regulate the technology. It is currently used only in controlled environments, such as farms and warehouses, but future applications could seek to extend its use in the UK to the delivery of rental cars. The technology allows for vehicles to be controlled remotely, potentially in public spaces. There is currently no UK law for a driver to be in the vehicle they are controlling.

To the casual observer, this electric rental car whizzing by looks like yet another test of a self-driving car. But actually, someone is driving the car – only they're doing so from miles away. And that's what makes this business model stand apart from the many other autonomous vehicle operations. The car is being driven remotely from a building where an operator uses cameras in the car to see where it's going and can steer, brake and accelerate. "We can make remotely controllable cars (for) any kind of electric vehicle," said Enn Laansoo, CEO and co-founder of Elmo, a car-rental company based in the small Baltic nation of Estonia that's pioneering the technology.

Kyte, a fleet-logistics platform that allows customers to order rental cars delivered right to their doors, has raised a $30 million Series A round. In the short term, the startup wants to expand into new cities, countries and verticals, but the long-term goal is to build out a platform that can deliver vehicles via teleoperation or an autonomous system. "We need the foundation of a fleet operating system and a technology layer that is able to manage both the fleet now as well as a fleet of teleoperated vehicles or autonomous vehicles in the future," Nikolaus Volk, co-founder of Kyte, told TechCrunch. "Part of that is really building the data platform that includes sensing and telematics capabilities, and really supports teleoperated launches in the future." To be clear, Kyte isn't working on the software or hardware that will enable teleoperated or autonomous car delivery -- there are plenty of companies already doing that, and Kyte says it's in advanced conversations with multiple companies in the space with the goal of partnering on pilot deployments.

LDV Capital, a venture capital firm focussed on Visual Technologies, recently published a 19 page report thick with some pretty eye opening data around cameras. Specifically, how many cameras we can expect to have watching us, what they are watching us for, and how those insights will be used. According to their study, by 2022 there will be more than 44,354,881,622 [1] (that's 44 BILLION) cameras in use globally, collecting even more billions of images for visual collateral. This is incredible -- but what's interesting -- is that most of these images will never be seen by human eyes. This forecast is a revelation that our use of cameras is evolving into something markedly different than the random Snapchat clips and candid family memories of now.
