Casio's Fluffy AI Robot Squeaked Its Way Into My Heart

WIRED

The $430 Casio Moflin is a pointless but adorable robot you can't help but love. My friend's dog Wylie sits watching it, suspicious of its every move. Moflin is an AI companion robot made by the Japanese electronics manufacturer Casio. Via the companion app, I have chosen to name this one Puff, because--well--that is what it looks like. Wylie immediately clocks it as something to be wary of, a device that moves on its own but is not alive. Wylie barks, then runs out of the room, growling. When I found out Casio--yes, the same Casio that makes watches--had made an AI pet bot, I figured I was exactly the type of person it was made for.

AI pets could replace dogs and cats, but expert warns that 'long-term effects' are unknown

A recent study found robots that speak in a "charismatic" tone while directing a college class can boost creativity among humans. Artificial intelligence could soon start replacing household pets -- no vet bills required. As various types of robots continue to hit the market, AI-powered "animals" have arrived on the scene as well. One example is Go1, the world's first intelligent quadruped robot "companion" that is developed by China's Unitree Robotics. The robotic sidekick walks on all fours, much like a dog -- but there's no need for a collar or a leash.

Could your next pet be a robot?

The next step in artificial intelligence technology may be robot pets, at least according to one animal welfare researcher at the University of Melbourne. In a paper published in the latest edition of the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Dr. Jean-Loup Rault argues that, as the world becomes more populated, pets will become impractical. Those who cannot afford real pets may turn to robotic alternatives. "It's not a question of centuries from now," Dr. Rault wrote in his paper. "If 10 billion human beings live on the planet in 2050 as predicted, it's likely to occur sooner than we think. If you'd described Facebook to someone 20 years ago, they'd think you were crazy. But we are already seeing people form strong emotional bonds with robot dogs in Japan."
