BrandPost: Pirates of the Cloud - Ransomware and bitcoins

PCWorld

Michelle is a small business attorney running her own practice in Los Angeles. Last month, walking into her office, she found that all of her computers had been held for'ransom.' Messages popped up saying that all data had been encrypted with professional software, and she would need to pay 300 in bitcoin currency to acquire the private key to access her own computer data. There was also a timer that said that she had only 48 hours to comply or else all the data would be permanently lost. Michelle ended up paying the'ransom' to this cloud pirate to save her business, and she had to do this for multiple computers that cost her thousands of dollars. She had to either pay in bitcoins or in some obscure foreign currency.
