Assassin's Creed: Origins's Discovery Tour mode shows how great educational games could be
Do you know what a "Hippodamian Grid Plan" is? I didn't until I played Assassin's Creed: Origins's new Discovery Tour mode. Turns out Hippodamus of Miletus is known as "the father of European urban planning," a Greek born in 498 B.C.E. Most important: His ideas were adopted by Deinokrates, principle planner for the city of Alexandria. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Assassin's Creed: Origins review in progress: Climb like an Egyptian
It all makes sense once you know the team who worked on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag worked on Assassin's Creed: Origins. Which is to say: The reboot has been rebooted. After Black Flag's sprawling Caribbean adventure, Ubisoft said it wanted to rediscover the "roots" of I the Assassin's Creed franchise for its next installment, Unity. And laugh at Unity's abysmal launch all you want (I certainly did), it accomplished Ubisoft's goal. Unity brought the series back to the Assassin's Creed II era, focusing on a single city (Paris) with enough towering cathedrals and palaces to let the reworked parkour mechanics shine.
Assassin's Creed: Origins adds Discovery Tour mode focused on the history of Ptolemaic Egypt
Well then it looks like you might want to...pick up a copy of Assassin's Creed: Origins later this year. Last week at an Assassin's Creed: Origins preview event here in San Francisco, Ubisoft revealed that the latest in the globetrotting murder series will feature a brand new "Discovery Tour" mode. In the Discovery Tour, all combat and story will be stripped away, leaving Ubisoft's massive map of Egypt a sort of living museum. You'll be able to walk around the map and explore at your leisure, but more importantly you'll also be able to access the titular tours. For our demo, Ubisoft showcased a "Mummies" tour consisting of 30 nodes placed around the map.
