Bridging the Skills Gap: A Course Model for Modern Generative AI Education

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Research on how the popularization of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools impacts learning environments has led to hesitancy among educators to teach these tools in classrooms, creating two observed disconnects. Generative AI competency is increasingly valued in industry but not in higher education, and students are experimenting with generative AI without formal guidance. The authors argue students across fields must be taught to responsibly and expertly harness the potential of AI tools to ensure job market readiness and positive outcomes. Computer Science trajectories are particularly impacted, and while consistently top ranked U.S. Computer Science departments teach the mechanisms and frameworks underlying AI, few appear to offer courses on applications for existing generative AI tools. A course was developed at a private research university to teach undergraduate and graduate Computer Science students applications for generative AI tools in software development. Two mixed method surveys indicated students overwhelmingly found the course valuable and effective. Co-authored by the instructor and one of the graduate students, this paper explores the context, implementation, and impact of the course through data analysis and reflections from both perspectives. It additionally offers recommendations for replication in and beyond Computer Science departments. This is the extended version of this paper to include technical appendices.

Will artificial intelligence make us smarter or dumber? It's up to us.

Artificial intelligence (AI) language models like ChatGPT, BLOOM, and OPT-175B are a hot topic of conversation in academic circles. What are they? Should they be allowed in educational settings? Will they make us dumber? Will their use lead to widespread cheating? Can we use them to promote critical thinking and writing skills? How? To answer these questions, let's ask ChatGPT.

AI in higher education โ€“ A tool for better learning?

#artificialintelligence

Jacques Viljoen 24 February 2023 Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education has sparked a dynamic discussion about the potential gains and drawbacks of this technology. Benefits could include more personalised and efficient learning experiences and increased accessibility to information. Challenges may well centre on privacy concerns, ethical considerations and the potential for AI systems to preserve existing biases. Given the complex issues surrounding AI in education, it is crucial to carefully weigh these benefits and challenges to make informed decisions, for instance, about incorporating ChatGPT into the education system. ChatGPT ChatGPT, like any AI language model, has limitations regarding its accuracy and handling of complex or abstract concepts.

Boost Your Career With an Artificial Intelligence Course

#artificialintelligence

An artificial intelligence (AI) course is a type of academic program that focuses on teaching students about the principles and techniques of AI. These courses typically cover machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, and computer vision and may also include elements of mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Students who take an artificial intelligence course may learn how to design, implement, and evaluate AI systems and may also have the opportunity to work on projects that involve building or programming AI systems. The specific content of an AI course will vary depending on the course level (e.g., introductory, intermediate, or advanced) and the institution offering the course. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that is transforming many aspects of our society and economy.

ChatGPT: A Powerful Learning Tool for the Classroom

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we approach education, and one such technology that is making waves is ChatGPT, an AI-powered language model developed by OpenAI. As educators, it's essential that we understand the potential benefits of utilizing ChatGPT in the classroom, as well as the best practices for implementation. First, let's take a look at the capabilities of ChatGPT. This technology can assist students with a variety of tasks, such as research and writing. ChatGPT can generate topic ideas, find relevant sources, and even edit written work. Additionally, it can create study aids such as flashcards and practice test questions, making studying more efficient and effective.

AI bots as virtual teachers

#artificialintelligence

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." The pandemic not only propelled us to rethink the means of how we learn โ€“ accelerating the adoption of online learning, but also brought to the forefront discourses around the quality of education, and more importantly, accessibility for all. Adoption of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality have enabled us to provide students with immersive and personalised learning experiences and, while doing so, achieve superior learning outcomes. And to my mind, adoption of AI bots as virtual teachers is the next big innovation that has the potential to transform the face of education. AI bots, chatbots in particular, have become a rather common phenomenon in today's time.

Machine Learning Practical Workout

The course provides students with practical hands-on experience in training deep and machine learning models using real-world dataset. "Deep Learning and Machine Learning are one of the hottest tech fields to be in right now! The field is exploding with opportunities and career prospects. Machine/Deep Learning techniques are widely used in several sectors nowadays such as banking, healthcare, transportation and technology. Machine learning is the study of algorithms that teach computers to learn from experience. Through experience (i.e.: more training data), computers can continuously improve their performance. Deep Learning is a subset of Machine learning that utilizes multi-layer Artificial Neural Networks. Deep Learning is inspired by the human brain and mimics the operation of biological neurons. A hierarchical, deep artificial neural network is formed by connecting multiple artificial neurons in a layered fashion. The more hidden layers added to the network, the more "deep" the network will be, the more complex nonlinear relationships that can be modeled. Deep learning is widely used in self-driving cars, face and speech recognition, and healthcare applications. The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge of key aspects of deep and machine learning techniques in a practical, easy and fun way. The course provides students with practical hands-on experience in training deep and machine learning models using real-world dataset. The course is targeted towards students wanting to gain a fundamental understanding of Deep and machine learning models. Basic knowledge of programming is recommended. However, these topics will be extensively covered during early course lectures; therefore, the course has no prerequisites, and is open to any student with basic programming knowledge. Students who enroll in this course will master deep and machine learning models and can directly apply these skills to solve real world challenging problems."
