Through iterative simulations, cognitive agents demonstrate advanced capabilities in task delegation, inter-agent communication, and project lifecycle management. By employing natural language processing to facilitate meaningful dialogues, these agents emulate human roles and improve the efficiency and precision of Agile practices. Key findings from this investigation highlight the ability of LLM-powered cognitive agents to deliver measurable improvements in various metrics, including task completion times, quality of deliverables, and communication coherence. These agents exhibit scalability and adaptability, ensuring their applicability across diverse and complex project environments. This study underscores the potential of integrating LLM-powered agents into Agile project management frameworks as a means of advancing software engineering practices. This integration not only refines the execution of project management tasks but also sets the stage for a paradigm shift in how teams collaborate and address emerging challenges.

DevNous: An LLM-Based Multi-Agent System for Grounding IT Project Management in Unstructured Conversation

Doropoulos, Stavros, Vologiannidis, Stavros, Magnisalis, Ioannis

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The manual translation of unstructured team dialogue into the structured artifacts required for Information Technology (IT) project governance is a critical bottleneck in modern information systems management. We introduce DevNous, a Large Language Model-based (LLM) multi-agent expert system, to automate this unstructured-to-structured translation process. DevNous integrates directly into team chat environments, identifying actionable intents from informal dialogue and managing stateful, multi-turn workflows for core administrative tasks like automated task formalization and progress summary synthesis. To quantitatively evaluate the system, we introduce a new benchmark of 160 realistic, interactive conversational turns. The dataset was manually annotated with a multi-label ground truth and is publicly available. On this benchmark, DevNous achieves an exact match turn accuracy of 81.3\% and a multiset F1-Score of 0.845, providing strong evidence for its viability. The primary contributions of this work are twofold: (1) a validated architectural pattern for developing ambient administrative agents, and (2) the introduction of the first robust empirical baseline and public benchmark dataset for this challenging problem domain.

A Fuzzy Approach to Project Success: Measuring What Matters

Granja-Correia, João, Hernández-Linares, Remedios, Ferranti, Luca, Rego, Arménio

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper introduces a novel approach to project success evaluation by integrating fuzzy logic into an existing construct. Traditional Likert-scale measures often overlook the context-dependent and multifaceted nature of project success. The proposed hierarchical Type-1 Mamdani fuzzy system prioritizes sustained positive impact for end-users, reducing emphasis on secondary outcomes like stakeholder satisfaction and internal project success. This dynamic approach may provide a more accurate measure of project success and could be adaptable to complex evaluations. Future research will focus on empirical testing and broader applications of fuzzy logic in social science.

Of the 1,104 papers initially retrieved, only ten met the IC. This process was conducted by the main author and subsequently reviewed by the other authors. Secondly, we applied backward and forward snowballing (via Google Scholar) on each selected paper to identify additional relevant studies not captured by the initial Scopus search. This iterative process is illustrated in Figure 2. Through snowballing, we identified 17 additional papers, bringing the total number of selected studies to 27. In total, we screened over 2,400 papers across the Scopus search and snowballing iterations. D. Data Extraction and Classification Scheme The Data Extraction and Classification Scheme for each paper is outlined in Table II. The selection process and the extracted data are documented in our online Zenodo repository, which includes information on each identified paper, the reason for its inclusion or exclusion, and the data extracted to answer each RQ.

Enhancing Team Diversity with Generative AI: A Novel Project Management Framework

Chan, Johnny, Li, Yuming

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This research-in-progress paper presents a new project management framework that utilises GenAI technology. The framework is designed to address the common challenge of uniform team compositions in academic and research project teams, particularly in universities and research institutions. It does so by integrating sociologically identified patterns of successful team member personalities and roles, using GenAI agents to fill gaps in team dynamics. This approach adds an additional layer of analysis to conventional project management processes by evaluating team members' personalities and roles and employing GenAI agents, fine-tuned on personality datasets, to fill specific team roles. Our initial experiments have shown improvements in the model's ability to understand and process personality traits, suggesting the potential effectiveness of GenAI teammates in real-world project settings. This paper aims to explore the practical application of AI in enhancing team diversity and project management

Enhancing Project Performance Forecasting using Machine Learning Techniques

Sadeghi, Soheila

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Accurate forecasting of project performance metrics is crucial for successfully managing and delivering urban road reconstruction projects. Traditional methods often rely on static baseline plans and fail to consider the dynamic nature of project progress and external factors. This research proposes a machine learning-based approach to forecast project performance metrics, such as cost variance and earned value, for each Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) category in an urban road reconstruction project. The proposed model utilizes time series forecasting techniques, including Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, to predict future performance based on historical data and project progress. The model also incorporates external factors, such as weather patterns and resource availability, as features to enhance the accuracy of forecasts. By applying the predictive power of machine learning, the performance forecasting model enables proactive identification of potential deviations from the baseline plan, which allows project managers to take timely corrective actions. The research aims to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach using a case study of an urban road reconstruction project, comparing the model's forecasts with actual project performance data. The findings of this research contribute to the advancement of project management practices in the construction industry, offering a data-driven solution for improving project performance monitoring and control.

Randomness Is All You Need: Semantic Traversal of Problem-Solution Spaces with Large Language Models

Sandholm, Thomas, Mukherjee, Sayandev, Huberman, Bernardo A.

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present a novel approach to exploring innovation problem and solution domains using LLM fine-tuning with a custom idea database. By semantically traversing the bi-directional problem and solution tree at different temperature levels we achieve high diversity in solution edit distance while still remaining close to the original problem statement semantically. In addition to finding a variety of solutions to a given problem, this method can also be used to refine and clarify the original problem statement. As further validation of the approach, we implemented a proof-of-concept Slack bot to serve as an innovation assistant.

Data-driven project planning: An integrated network learning and constraint relaxation approach in favor of scheduling

Cohen, Izack

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Our focus is on projects, i.e., business processes, which are emerging as the economic drivers of our times. Differently from day-to-day operational processes that do not require detailed planning, a project requires planning and resource-constrained scheduling for coordinating resources across sub- or related projects and organizations. A planner in charge of project planning has to select a set of activities to perform, determine their precedence constraints, and schedule them according to temporal project constraints. We suggest a data-driven project planning approach for classes of projects such as infrastructure building and information systems development projects. A project network is first learned from historical records. The discovered network relaxes temporal constraints embedded in individual projects, thus uncovering where planning and scheduling flexibility can be exploited for greater benefit. Then, the network, which contains multiple project plan variations, from which one has to be selected, is enriched by identifying decision rules and frequent paths. The planner can rely on the project network for: 1) decoding a project variation such that it forms a new project plan, and 2) applying resource-constrained project scheduling procedures to determine the project's schedule and resource allocation. Using two real-world project datasets, we show that the suggested approach may provide the planner with significant flexibility (up to a 26% reduction of the critical path of a real project) to adjust the project plan and schedule. We believe that the proposed approach can play an important part in supporting decision making towards automated data-driven project planning.
