Intermittently Observable Markov Decision Processes

This paper investigates MDPs with intermittent state information. We consider a scenario where the controller perceives the state information of the process via an unreliable communication channel. The transmissions of state information over the whole time horizon are modeled as a Bernoulli lossy process. Hence, the problem is finding an optimal policy for selecting actions in the presence of state information losses. We first formulate the problem as a belief MDP to establish structural results. The effect of state information losses on the expected total discounted reward is studied systematically. Then, we reformulate the problem as a tree MDP whose state space is organized in a tree structure. Two finite-state approximations to the tree MDP are developed to find near-optimal policies efficiently. Finally, we put forth a nested value iteration algorithm for the finite-state approximations, which is proved to be faster than standard value iteration. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods.
Probabilistic Constraint Tightening Techniques for Trajectory Planning with Predictive Control

In order for automated mobile vehicles to navigate in the real world with minimal collision risks, it is necessary for their planning algorithms to consider uncertainties from measurements and environmental disturbances. In this paper, we consider analytical solutions for a conservative approximation of the mutual probability of collision between two robotic vehicles in the presence of such uncertainties. Therein, we present two methods, which we call unitary scaling and principal axes rotation, for decoupling the bivariate integral required for efficient approximation of the probability of collision between two vehicles including orientation effects. We compare the conservatism of these methods analytically and numerically. By closing a control loop through a model predictive guidance scheme, we observe through Monte-Carlo simulations that directly implementing collision avoidance constraints from the conservative approximations remains infeasible for real-time planning. We then propose and implement a convexification approach based on the tightened collision constraints that significantly improves the computational efficiency and robustness of the predictive guidance scheme.
Group-based control of large-scale micro-robot swarms with on-board Physical Finite-State Machines

An important problem in microrobotics is how to control a large group of microrobots with a global control signal. This paper focuses on controlling a large-scale swarm of MicroStressBots with on-board physical finite-state machines. We introduce the concept of group-based control, which makes it possible to scale up the swarm size while reducing the complexity both of robot fabrication as well as swarm control. We prove that the group-based control system is locally accessible in terms of the robot positions. We further hypothesize based on extensive simulations that the system is globally controllable. A nonlinear optimization strategy is proposed to control the swarm by minimizing control effort. We also propose a probabilistically complete collision avoidance method that is suitable for online use. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the proposed methods in simulations.
