podcast series
People are using Google study software to make AI podcasts--and they're weird and amazing
The tool generates a podcast called Deep Dive, which features a male and a female voice discussing whatever you uploaded. The voices are breathtakingly realistic--the episodes are laced with little human-sounding phrases like "Man" and "Wow" and "Oh right" and "Hold on, let me get this right." The "hosts" even interrupt each other. To test it out, I copied every story from MIT Technology Review's 125th-anniversary issue into NotebookLM and made the system generate a 10-minute podcast with the results. The system picked a couple of stories to focus on, and the AI hosts did a great job at conveying the general, high-level gist of what the issue was about.
How we got hired to create an AI-generated feature film screenplay
For the past six months, I've been working in secret on a real-world experiment. Today, I'm delighted to begin sharing what we've been doing, why we've been doing it and to be part of a larger public debate about the questions it raises. I teamed up with a particle physicist and together we secured a professional script development deal to create a feature film script entirely written by artificial intelligence (AI). There is a lot to share about this project, and so I can't hope to cover it all in this article. Instead, I'm going to introduce the project and tell you what's coming out soon. You'll be able to hear me and Dr Eliel Camargo Molina talk about the project live next week, at the Future of Film summit.

The US town ruled by an AI storyteller
The beat generation poet Philip Lamantia believed that in order to create authentic writing one had to first reach a trance-like state in between sleep and wakefulness - a place of the primal sources of creativity that, according to him, could be attained with the help of a little peyote. A thousand years before that the poet Homer was invoking the muses of Grecian myths in reach a similar state of inspiration, suggesting that as far back as the writing of The Odyssey, storytelling was viewed as a partnership with something other than human. What about stories developed in partnership with artificial intelligence? This can feel at odds with the romantic view of storytelling, where the author inhales creative inspiration and exhales exacting prose. But perhaps it presents another way of understanding the muse - an electric muse working in partnership with the artist.
