Artificial intelligence (AI) company qure.ai is testing its application for chest X-Rays to detect tuberculosis (TB) with mobile TB screening programs in several developing countries. However, one issue the company encountered was the lack of PACS systems to run the software or the lack of internet connections in rural areas. This black box is a mini-server/computer the company provides to allow remote clinics a platform to run the AI and house the digital images.

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, computer technician Jim Delfino was laid off by the Florida company at which he had worked for over two decades. After five years of looking for employment in the same field, Delfino gave up and instead took a job as a sorter at a Chinese-owned scrap yard in Tampa. The pay was decent, and since it was manual labor, it didn't matter that Delfino's computer skills were somewhat out of date. In fact, the first time Delfino's son Christian came to visit the site, in 2015, he couldn't help recognizing some of the old monitors, CPUs, and printers piled up in stacks, waiting to be processed. "The same equipment he was working with in the computer tech industry was now getting trashed," recalls Christian, a Brooklyn-based photographer.

Adobe Scan uses AI to find documents in your photo gallery

Engadget

Adobe introduced a new feature for Scan, the iOS and Android app that converts scanned documents into editable PDFs using your phone's camera. Thanks to the latest update, Scan can look through your phone's pictures and find receipts, documents, forms and more thanks to AI. It will then turn them into editable and searchable PDFs that you can edit in Acrobat and then export to Microsoft Office. While the scanning is free, advanced PDF features will require a $10/month in-app subscription. Scan also now allows you to search by name or date to find files. It is compatible with iOS 11's Files feature, and Android users can search while offline.

The Shimada family gathers around Paro, a cuddly, furry seal designed by Japanese roboticists to engage patients suffering from dementia--or in the Shimadas' case, to serve as a virtual pet. Its sensors allow it to discern the presence of people and respond to touch by wiggling its body and emitting seal-like cries. Its electronic brain has a rudimentary ability to learn words taught by its users and respond with sounds and movements. Some critics of social robots worry that the time spent with such devices could supplant interactions with real people, further distancing impaired people from society.

Microsoft's Windows 10 is available as a free upgrade starting today for many users of Windows 7 or 8. Anyone who has the home or professional versions of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 now has a year to take advantage of the offer. If you have plain Windows 7 or 8, you'll have to upgrade them first -- for free. Microsoft has more details about how to upgrade to Windows 10 here. But when it comes to operating systems, familiarity breeds contempt of change. A lot of consumers feel that if it ain't broke, stop touching my computer.
