Actor, writer strikes could lead to Hollywood's 'absolute collapse' if not resolved soon: Paramount CEO

FOX News

Media mogul Barry Diller urged all parties to reach a resolution by September 1 amid ongoing Hollywood strikes during a Sunday interview on'Face the Nation.' Paramount CEO Barry Diller delivered a grim prediction for Hollywood on Sunday, warning that the industry is facing an "absolute collapse" if the Writers' and Screen Actors Guild joint strike extends into the fall. "What will happen is, if in fact, it doesn't get settled until Christmas or so, then next year, there's not going to be many programs for anybody to watch. So, you're gonna see subscriptions get pulled, which is going to reduce the revenue of all these movie companies, television companies, the result of which is that there will be no programs," Diller said on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday. "And at just the time, [the] strike is settled that you want to get back up, there won't be enough money."

Senate warned of 'perfect storm' leading to emerging AI disaster: 'Democracy itself is threatened'

FOX News

Senators on Tuesday got the green light to impose significant federal regulation on artificial intelligence systems, not just from two industry giants, but from an AI expert who warned that the fate of the nation may depend on tough AI rules from Congress. A Senate Judiciary subcommittee heard from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and IBM Chief Privacy & Trust Officer Christina Montgomery, who both invited federal oversight of AI even though they split on whether a new federal agency is needed. In between those witnesses sat Gary Marcus, the New York University professor emeritus and leader of Uber's AI labs from 2016 to 2017, who issued a stark warning that human life is about to be upended by this unpredictable technology. "They can and will create persuasive lies at a scale humanity has never seen before," Marcus warned of generative AI systems. "Outsiders will use them to affect our elections, insiders to manipulate our markets and our political systems. Marcus warned that AI systems that do severe damage to humans' trust in each other have already been released and that the damage is already mounting. Gary Marcus, professor emeritus at New York University, speaks during a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. "A law professor, for example, was accused by a chatbot of sexual harassment.

K-12 staffing shortages threaten reading instruction–AI can help

#artificialintelligence

The challenges facing K-12 leaders as they start the new school year are enormous. For instance, the latest test results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show that fourth graders' average reading skills have dropped by five points on a 500-point scale since the start of the pandemic--the biggest decline in more than 30 years. This isn't surprising news, as educators know their students are behind where they should be in terms of basic literacy skills. These skills underpin all other skills that students learn in school; if children can't read well, then their entire education is at risk. Making up this lost ground while continuing to ensure that students learn grade-level skills is hard enough.

How Facial Recognition Tech Made Its Way to the Battlefield in Ukraine

Slate

When the Russian warship Moskva sank in the Black Sea south of Ukraine, some 500 crew members were reportedly on board. The Russian state held a big ceremony for the surviving sailors and officers who were on the ship. But, considering Russia's history of being not exactly truthful when it comes to events like this, many people wondered whether these were actual sailors from Moskva. Toler is director of research and training for Bellingcat, the group that specializes in open-source and social media investigations. He used facial recognition software to identify the men in the video through images in Russian social media, and found that most of the men were indeed sailors from Sevastopol, the town the ship was operating out of.

Four key factors driving demand for digital insurance workers

#artificialintelligence

A perfect storm is engulfing the insurance industry. Incredible demand volatility and increasing claim complexity has provoked new, unprecedented – and unpredictable – spikes in workload. If leading players can't respond with agility to this short-notice, high-intensity demand for digital insurance workers, then service levels, customer loyalty, trust, reputation and operating margins are under threat. The pandemic has been a real eye-opener for insurers. Standard business continuity plans proved inadequate as business leaders faced dual imperatives of equipping and training a remote workforce – often within days – and dealing with huge spikes in demand for customer support.

The AI Dilemma: The Perfect World Or The Perfect Storm?

#artificialintelligence

I have spent the last three years researching with Malay Upadhyay the positive and negative risks of artificial intelligence. One area in particular to be alert to is the evolution of robots to cobots. Cobots are smaller robots performing more service oriented and monotonous tasks freeing up more operator time to be able to handle more complex or creative tasks. Cobots are robots designed to function beside a human in a shared workspace, and given close working proximity to humans, cobots have particular strict security measures for co-habitation with humans. Recent MIT Research has also found that when humans work in tandem with robots, humans are 85 percent more productive than when either worked alone.
