This week we revealed everything we know about mega-project Neom
This week on Dezeen, we compiled an explainer of all the key facts you need to know about the Neom development in Saudi Arabia and its megacity The Line, which is proving to be the most controversial architecture project in recent history. Set to occupy around as much space as the entire country of Albania, Neom will be split into 10 different regions including a floating port, a ski resort in the Sarwat Mountains and a mirrored city for nine million people formed from two linear skyscrapers. Our explainer breaks down everything from how the project is financed to what architecture studios are working on its various different components. Saudi Arabia also revealed another strange-shaped skyscraper this week in the form of a giant cube, which is set to be constructed in the capital of Riyadh. Measuring 400 metres high and 400 metres long on each side, the Mukaab building is set to become the city's tallest building and will house two million square metres of shops alongside cultural and tourist attractions.

The Best Time-Loop Story Out There Is on the PS5
On paper, Deathloop sounds like another entry in the seemingly endless parade of games, movies, and TV shows about time loops--a period of time that repeats again and again and again, until our hero can figure out how to reset the flow of time and move forward once again. Much has been written about the ubiquity of these stories: There's Russian Doll, Happy Death Day, Palm Springs, and The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, to name only a few recent, well-known examples. A glut of time loop games from over the last half decade include titles as diverse asThe Sexy Brutale, Outer Wilds, Minit, Elsinore, and Gnosia, among those most acclaimed. This year in particular is stacked with games in which players must return to the same time and place ad infinitum, from Returnal to 12 Minutes and The Forgotten City. Time loops stories are clearly in vogue right now, but they aren't new.
'Palm Springs' is 'Groundhog Day' With a Twist
Palm Springs is the latest film to put an original spin on the idea of a character reliving the same day over and over again. Video game journalist Blake J. Harris has loved the concept ever since watching Groundhog Day as a kid. "Groundhog Day is a top five all-time favorite movie," Harris says in Episode 435 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "And Palm Springs is probably my favorite movie I've seen in a year." Palm Springs features three characters--played by Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, and J.K. Simmons--who all relive the same wedding over and over.

Amazon goes self driving: Retail giant spotted using autonomous trucks
Amazon is using self-driving trucks developed by Embark to haul cargo on the I-10 interstate highway. The trucks were first noticed by a Reddit user, who uploaded images this week showing tractors emblazoned with the Embark logo and trailers painted with the Amazon Prime logo. Rather than building its own trucks, Embark integrates its self-driving systems into existing semis, and only designs the system to operate on highways, unlike competitors such as Telsa who hope their electric semi will operate on all roads. The trucks were first noticed by a Reddit user, who photographed and shared images this week showing tractors emblazoned with the Embark logo and trailers painted with the Amazon Prime logo. 'Embark has compiled many firsts for automated trucks, including driving across the country, operating in rain and fog, and navigating highway transfers,' the firm says.

At Amazon's MARS Conference, Jeff Bezos Plots The Future With 200 (Very) Big Brains
Jeff Bezos has his left foot propped up on a fire pit, his face illuminated by the flames. A drink in his hand, he's feeling relaxed, often bursting out in that signature bellow of a laugh. Joining Bezos at the firepit that night and over the course of three days at the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs, California are about 200 of the world's smartest and most accomplished people–among them: two astronauts, at least one Nobel Prize winner, the former head of DARPA, NASA's former number two, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich ("BK," he's called here), MythBuster Adam Savage, Segway inventor Dean Kamen, and so on. With cigars and whiskey in their hands, these global power players are talking earnestly about Big Issues: gravitational waves, ground-breaking tools for helping the deaf perceive the world in new ways, cutting-edge robot grasping technology, hyper-efficient 3D-printed rocket engines, and AI, always AI. Welcome to Amazon's MARS Conference–or, as Bezos calls it, "Summer camp for geeks." Amazon's has numerous reasons for hosting the event.

Tesla Model 3 Review: The Best Electric Car You Can't Buy
The Model 3 is supposed to be Tesla's humdrum car, the everyday, cut-price offering to the masses. Not the sort of thing that impresses Angelenos, so blasé about celebrities and rich kids valeting their supercars at restaurants. In LA, it takes a special vehicle to stand out. Yet, as I'm driving around town in a (bright red) Model 3, I feel unusually conspicuous, attracting the eyes of passers-by, some of them walking into traffic for a closer look. Other Tesla owners come up to me to chat while charging. Surely, some of them are among the 450,000 people who have already put down a $1,000 deposit for the right to buy this car.

Self-Driving Trucks Are Now Running Between Texas and California
If you live in Southern California and you've ordered one of those fancy new smart refrigerators in the past few weeks, it may have hitched a ride to you on a robotruck. Since early October, autonomous trucks built and operated by the startup Embark have been hauling Frigidaire refrigerators 650 miles along the I-10 freeway, from a warehouse in El Paso, Texas, to a distribution center in Palm Springs, California. A human driver rides in the cab to monitor the computer chauffeur for now, but the ultimate goal of this (auto) pilot program is to dump the fleshbag and let the trucks rumble solo down the highway. "This is the first time someone has demonstrated this end-to-end," Embark CEO Alex Rodrigues says. "It showcases the way that we see self-driving playing into the logistics industry."

Amazon Secret Robot Event Boasts VR, Ax Making, Wood Splitting
Robotics companies and academics descended on a resort in Palm Springs this week for an invitation-only conference organized by Amazon.com Inc. to bring together experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, home automation and space exploration. At the event, held at the Parker Palm Springs, there were robotic arms dueling with light sabers from Star Wars, seminars about imbuing machines with human values and a celebrity appearance by film director Ron Howard, known for his portrayal of Richie Cunningham in the sitcom Happy Days. Jeff Bezos mingled with attendees; one said he drank single-malt whiskey with Amazon's chief executive officer. Representatives from companies such as Rethink Robotics, Toyota Motor Corp., and others attended the conference, called MARS, short for Machine-Learning (Home) Automation, Robotics and Space Exploration.
