How OpenAI's Sam Altman Is Thinking About AGI and Superintelligence in 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently published a post on his personal blog reflecting on AI progress and his predictions for how the technology will impact humanity's future. "We are now confident we know how to build AGI [artificial general intelligence] as we have traditionally understood it,"Altman wrote. He added that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is beginning to turn its attention to superintelligence. While there is no universally accepted definition for AGI, OpenAI has historically defined it as "a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work." Although AI systems already outperform humans in narrow domains, such as chess, the key to AGI is generality.

AI models can outperform humans in tests to identify mental states
Theory of mind is a hallmark of emotional and social intelligence that allows us to infer people's intentions and engage and empathize with one another. Most children pick up these kinds of skills between three and five years of age. The researchers tested two families of large language models, OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 and three versions of Meta's Llama, on tasks designed to test the theory of mind in humans, including identifying false beliefs, recognizing faux pas, and understanding what is being implied rather than said directly. They also tested 1,907 human participants in order to compare the sets of scores. The team conducted five types of tests.

Soldiers could teach future robots how to outperform humans
At the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command's Army Research Laboratory and the University of Texas at Austin, researchers designed an algorithm that allows an autonomous ground vehicle to improve its existing navigation systems by watching a human drive. The team tested its approach -- called adaptive planner parameter learning from demonstration, or APPLD -- on one of the Army's experimental autonomous ground vehicles. "Using approaches like APPLD, current Soldiers in existing training facilities will be able to contribute to improvements in autonomous systems simply by operating their vehicles as normal," said Army researcher Dr. Garrett Warnell. "Techniques like these will be an important contribution to the Army's plans to design and field next-generation combat vehicles that are equipped to navigate autonomously in off-road deployment environments." Rather than replacing a classical system altogether, APPLD learns how to tune the existing system to behave more like the human demonstration.
