The first open-source equivalent of OpenAI's ChatGPT has arrived, but good luck running it on your laptop -- or at all. This week, Philip Wang, the developer responsible for reverse-engineering closed-sourced AI systems including Meta's Make-A-Video, released PaLM RLHF, a text-generating model that behaves similarly to ChatGPT. The system combines PaLM, a large language model from Google, and a technique called Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback -- RLHF, for short -- to create a system that can accomplish pretty much any task that ChatGPT can, including drafting emails and suggesting computer code. That is to say, the system hasn't been trained on the example data from the web necessary for it to actually work. Downloading PaLM RLHF won't magically install a ChatGPT-like experience -- that would require compiling gigabytes of text from which the model can learn and finding hardware beefy enough to handle the training workload.

Generative Tech Begins

#artificialintelligence

The biggest change to the Internet since crypto just happened. A whole new world of applications opened up to Founders in the last 6 months. Generative Tech is the next step in software. It turns deep learning engines into collaborators to generate new content and ideas nearly like a human would. Some have called it "Generative AI," but AI is only half of the equation. AI models are the enabling base layers of the stack. The top layers will be thousands of applications. Generative Tech is about what will actually touch us โ€“ what you can do with AI as a partner. The Generative Tech sector is developing at such a pace that it has already been validated by real revenues and high valuations, even though we collectively didn't have a name for it until a month ago. Open AI, which powers GTP-3 and other AI models, is rumored to be raising capital at a valuation of many 10's of billions.

AI Weekly: Researchers attempt an open source alternative to GitHub's Copilot

#artificialintelligence

The Transform Technology Summits start October 13th with Low-Code/No Code: Enabling Enterprise Agility. Let the OSS Enterprise newsletter guide your open source journey! In June, OpenAI teamed up with GitHub to launch Copilot, a service that provides suggestions for whole lines of code inside development environments like Microsoft Visual Studio. Powered by an AI model called Codex -- which OpenAI later exposed through an API -- Copilot can translate natural language into code across more than a dozen programming languages, interpreting commands in plain English and executing them. Now, a community effort is underway to create an open source, freely available alternative to Copilot and OpenAI's Codex model.

Two months exploring deep learning and computer vision

#artificialintelligence

I decided to develop familiarity with computer vision and machine learning techniques. As a web developer, I found this growing sphere exciting, but did not have any contextual experience working with these technologies. I am embarking on a two year journey to explore this field. If you haven't read it already, you can see Part 1 here: From webdev to computer vision and geo. I ended up getting myself moving by exploring any opportunity I had to excite myself with learning.

On The Rise of Data Science Startups

@machinelearnbot

They took NYC Data Science Academy 12 week full time Data Science Bootcamp program between Sept 23 to Dec 18, 2015. The post was based on their second class project(due at 4th week of the program). Our project is centralized around the development of an open source workbench that is focused on providing data scientists with automated tools for exploratory analysis and model selection. The full stack design is made in R, a statistical programming language. Before getting into the low-level details, let's take a step back and think about the trending term "Data Science."
