The best approximation pair problem relative to two subsets in a normed space
In the classical best approximation pair (BAP) problem, one is given two nonempty, closed, convex and disjoint subsets in a finite- or an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, and the goal is to find a pair of points, each from each subset, which realizes the distance between the subsets. We discuss the problem in more general normed spaces and with possibly non-convex subsets, and focus our attention on the issues of uniqueness and existence of the solution to the problem. As far as we know, these fundamental issues have not received much attention. We present several sufficient geometric conditions for the (at most) uniqueness of a BAP. These conditions are related to the structure and the relative orientation of the boundaries of the subsets and to the norm. We also present many sufficient conditions for the existence of a BAP. Our results significantly extend the horizon of a recent algorithm for solving the BAP problem [Censor, Mansour, Reem, J. Approx. Theory (2024)]. The paper also shows, perhaps for the first time, how wide is the scope of the BAP problem in terms of the scientific communities which are involved in it (frequently independently) and in terms of its applications.
Random Normed k-Means: A Paradigm-Shift in Clustering within Probabilistic Metric Spaces

Existing approaches remain largely constrained by traditional distance metrics, limiting their effectiveness in handling random data. In this work, we introduce the first k-means variant in the literature that operates within a probabilistic metric space, replacing conventional distance measures with a well-defined distance distribution function. This pioneering approach enables more flexible and robust clustering in both deterministic and random datasets, establishing a new foundation for clustering in stochastic environments. By adopting a probabilistic perspective, our method not only introduces a fresh paradigm but also establishes a rigorous theoretical framework that is expected to serve as a key reference for future clustering research involving random data. Extensive experiments on diverse real and synthetic datasets assess our model's effectiveness using widely recognized evaluation metrics, including Silhouette, Davies-Bouldin, Calinski Harabasz, the adjusted Rand index, and distortion. Comparative analyses against established methods such as k-means++, fuzzy c-means, and kernel probabilistic k-means demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed random normed k-means (RNKM) algorithm. Notably, RNKM exhibits a remarkable ability to identify nonlinearly separable structures, making it highly effective in complex clustering scenarios. These findings position RNKM as a groundbreaking advancement in clustering research, offering a powerful alternative to traditional techniques while addressing a long-standing gap in the literature. By bridging probabilistic metrics with clustering, this study provides a foundational reference for future developments and opens new avenues for advanced data analysis in dynamic, data-driven applications.
Normed Spaces for Graph Embedding

Theoretical results from discrete geometry suggest that normed spaces can abstractly embed finite metric spaces with surprisingly low theoretical bounds on distortion in low dimensions. In this paper, inspired by this theoretical insight, we highlight normed spaces as a more flexible and computationally efficient alternative to several popular Riemannian manifolds for learning graph embeddings. Normed space embeddings significantly outperform several popular manifolds on a large range of synthetic and real-world graph reconstruction benchmark datasets while requiring significantly fewer computational resources. We also empirically verify the superiority of normed space embeddings on growing families of graphs associated with negative, zero, and positive curvature, further reinforcing the flexibility of normed spaces in capturing diverse graph structures as graph sizes increase. Lastly, we demonstrate the utility of normed space embeddings on two applied graph embedding tasks, namely, link prediction and recommender systems. Our work highlights the potential of normed spaces for geometric graph representation learning, raises new research questions, and offers a valuable tool for experimental mathematics in the field of finite metric space embeddings. We make our code and data publically available.
Generalized Inversion of Nonlinear Operators
Inversion of operators is a fundamental concept in data processing. Inversion of linear operators is well studied, supported by established theory. When an inverse either does not exist or is not unique, generalized inverses are used. Most notable is the Moore-Penrose inverse, widely used in physics, statistics, and various fields of engineering. This work investigates generalized inversion of nonlinear operators. We first address broadly the desired properties of generalized inverses, guided by the Moore-Penrose axioms. We define the notion for general sets, and then a refinement, termed pseudo-inverse, for normed spaces. We present conditions for existence and uniqueness of a pseudo-inverse and establish theoretical results investigating its properties, such as continuity, its value for operator compositions and projection operators, and others. Analytic expressions are given for the pseudo-inverse of some well-known, non-invertible, nonlinear operators, such as hard- or soft-thresholding and ReLU. We analyze a neural layer and discuss relations to wavelet thresholding. Next, the Drazin inverse, and a relaxation, are investigated for operators with equal domain and range. We present scenarios where inversion is expressible as a linear combination of forward applications of the operator. Such scenarios arise for classes of nonlinear operators with vanishing polynomials, similar to the minimal or characteristic polynomials for matrices. Inversion using forward applications may facilitate the development of new efficient algorithms for approximating generalized inversion of complex nonlinear operators.
Non-Euclidean Differentially Private Stochastic Convex Optimization

Differentially private (DP) stochastic convex optimization (SCO) is a fundamental problem, where the goal is to approximately minimize the population risk with respect to a convex loss function, given a dataset of i.i.d. samples from a distribution, while satisfying differential privacy with respect to the dataset. Most of the existing works in the literature of private convex optimization focus on the Euclidean (i.e., $\ell_2$) setting, where the loss is assumed to be Lipschitz (and possibly smooth) w.r.t. the $\ell_2$ norm over a constraint set with bounded $\ell_2$ diameter. Algorithms based on noisy stochastic gradient descent (SGD) are known to attain the optimal excess risk in this setting. In this work, we conduct a systematic study of DP-SCO for $\ell_p$-setups. For $p=1$, under a standard smoothness assumption, we give a new algorithm with nearly optimal excess risk. This result also extends to general polyhedral norms and feasible sets. For $p\in(1, 2)$, we give two new algorithms, whose central building block is a novel privacy mechanism, which generalizes the Gaussian mechanism. Moreover, we establish a lower bound on the excess risk for this range of $p$, showing a necessary dependence on $\sqrt{d}$, where $d$ is the dimension of the space. Our lower bound implies a sudden transition of the excess risk at $p=1$, where the dependence on $d$ changes from logarithmic to polynomial, resolving an open question in prior work [TTZ15] . For $p\in (2, \infty)$, noisy SGD attains optimal excess risk in the low-dimensional regime; in particular, this proves the optimality of noisy SGD for $p=\infty$. Our work draws upon concepts from the geometry of normed spaces, such as the notions of regularity, uniform convexity, and uniform smoothness.
Good Algorithms Make Good Neighbors
A host of different tasks--such as identifying the song in a database most similar to your favorite song, or the drug most likely to interact with a given molecule--have the same basic problem at their core: finding the point in a dataset that is closest to a given point. This "nearest neighbor" problem shows up all over the place in machine learning, pattern recognition, and data analysis, as well as many other fields. Yet the nearest neighbor problem is not really a single problem. Instead, it has as many different manifestations as there are different notions of what it means for data points to be similar. In recent decades, computer scientists have devised efficient nearest neighbor algorithms for a handful of different definitions of similarity: the ordinary Euclidean distance between points, and a few other distance measures.
Representation of Quasi-Monotone Functionals by Families of Separating Hyperplanes
We characterize when the level sets of a continuous quasi-monotone functional defined on a suitable convex subset of a normed space can be uniquely represented by a family of bounded continuous functionals. Furthermore, we investigate how regularly these functionals depend on the parameterizing level. Finally, we show how this question relates to the recent problem of property elicitation that simultaneously attracted interest in machine learning, statistical evaluation of forecasts, and finance.
