Resurfaced Nikola Tesla writings about machines with their 'own mind' eerily predict rise of AI
Fox News correspondent Grady Trimble has the latest on fears the technology will spiral out of control on'Special Report.' Century-old writings by American inventor Nikola Tesla seem to predict the development of artificial intelligence, foreshadowing the rise of the groundbreaking tech. The technology and electricity pioneer's scientific brilliance set him up to make eerily accurate predictions, including prescient insight into the emergence of machines with their "own mind." "I purpose to show that, however impossible it may now seem, an automaton may be contrived which will have its'own mind,'" Tesla wrote in June 1900," and by this I mean that it will be able, independent of any operator, left entirely to itself, to perform, in response to external influences affecting its sensitive organs, a great variety of acts and operations as if it had intelligence." The comments were published in "The Century Magazine" in an essay titled "The Problem of Increasing Human Energy."

Lightweight Convolutional Approaches to Reading Comprehension on SQuAD
Bell, Tobin, Penchas, Benjamin
Current state-of-the-art reading comprehension models rely heavily on recurrent neural networks. We explored an entirely different approach to question answering: a convolutional model. By their nature, these convolutional models are fast to train and capture local dependencies well, though they can struggle with longer-range dependencies and thus require augmentation to achieve comparable performance to RNN-based models. We conducted over two dozen controlled experiments with convolutional models and various kernel/attention/regularization schemes to determine the precise performance gains of each strategy, while maintaining a focus on speed. We ultimately ensembled three models: crossconv (0.5398 dev F1), attnconv (0.5665), and maybeconv (0.5285). The ensembled model was able to achieve a 0.6238 F1 score using the official SQuAD evaluation script. Our individual convolutional model crossconv was able to exceed the performance of the RNN-plus-attention baseline by 25% while training 6 times faster.
The Crazy, Amazing Life Of Immigrant Nikola Tesla
The guitarist of the band'Lightningfan' Wang Hongbin (C) creates lightning with a Tesla Coil in a village outside of Fuzhou in China's Fujian province in June 2013. The Tesla Coil invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891 is a transformer that produces vast amounts of voltage at high frequencies that creates long bolts of electricity like lightning. Nikola Tesla was one of America's greatest inventors and carries a mystique unlike any other immigrant to the United States. Before he became the name of a car company and a character in modern science fiction novels, Nikola Tesla immigrated to the United States and turned into an inventor extraordinaire. Tesla is credited with many important innovations and his ideas are still talked about today.

Column: If Tesla was the real visionary, why does Edison get all the glory?
Sparks of electricity emanating from a Tesla coil at the Mendeleyevskaya metro station in Moscow, Russia, January 24, 2016. Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from John Wasik's new book, "Lightning Strikes: Timeless Lessons in Creativity from the Life and Work of Nikola Tesla" (Sterling, 2016), slightly edited for this column. World-changing inventions made Nikola Tesla a celebrity in his own time, but something otherworldly makes him transcend his era and remain a perpetual beacon for our civilization 70 years after his death. He's now an immortal rock star, an icon for billionaires, cyberpunks, artists and "maker" inventors who are still fiddling with everyday machines in their basements and garages. Search engine designers, energy czars, musicians, artists and creators everywhere feel his influence.

Nikola Tesla's Amazing Predictions for the 21st Century
In the 1930s journalists from publications like the New York Times and Time magazine would regularly visit Nikola Tesla at his home on the 20th floor of the Hotel Governor Clinton in Manhattan. There the elderly Tesla would regale them with stories of his early days as an inventor and often opined about what was in store for the future. Last year we looked at Tesla's prediction that eugenics and the forced sterilization of criminals and other supposed undesirables would somehow purify the human race by the year 2100. Today we have more from that particular article which appeared in the February 9, 1935, issue of Liberty magazine. The article is unique because it wasn't conducted as a simple interview like so many of Tesla's other media appearances from this time, but rather is credited as "by Nikola Tesla, as told to George Sylvester Viereck."

Nikola Tesla's 1898 drone patent warned us on unmanned machines
Mankind has made huge progress in the field of technology, and it is safe to say that we are in control of our technology… as of now. In the late 19th century, though, the world was far from assured about unmanned machines learning and functioning on their own. Highlighted by Instructional Technologist Matthew Schroyer, a patent owned in 1898 by innovator and inventor Nikola Tesla states his belief in the immensely destructive power of unmanned machines and drones. He affirms that such prospects of danger and destruction will lead nations to promote mutual peace. The patent states the use of machines by lending them autonomous control, along with wireless control by using radio waves.
Read Nikola Tesla's Drone Patent... From 1898
Nikola Tesla, the inventor, electric car company namesake, and beloved darling of the internet, had a great many visions in his mind. And not just killer robots, but killer robots he thought were so deadly that the mere risk of their use would bring about peace. The patent, for "Method of and apparatus for controlling mechanism of moving vessels or vehicles," was granted November 8th, 1898. For a device like this to work, it needed to be wireless, and Tesla envisioned it powered by electrical waves. In a broad sense, then, my invention differs from all of those systems which provide for the control of the mechanism carried by a moving object and governing its motion in that I require no intermediate wires, cables, or other form of electrical or mechanical connection with the object save the natural modia in space.
