Ultromics AI platform to expand trials to 20 NHS hospitals

A British AI platform for assisting with the diagnosis of heart disease will enter trials with 20 NHS hospitals before the end of 2018, after securing £10 million in first-round funding. UK start-up Ultromics has developed echocardiography analysis technology called Topological Analysis that claims to reduce errors diagnosing coronary artery disease by as much as 75%. The machine learning platform is currently being trialled at six NHS hospitals, and after garnering interest from a number of trusts earlier this year, Ultromics has secured investment to expand trials to additional UK sites. The fundraising was led by Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI), with Neptune, RT Ventures, GT Healthcare, Tanarra, Fushia and personal investors Andre Crawford-Brunt and Dieter Spälti also participating. The £10 million investment will be used to bring the technology to market in the USA, with Ultromics hoping to make it available in the UK from early 2019.

Robotic surgeons are on the march. Across the NHS they are taking over thousands of operations from their human counterparts for prostate cancer or kidney and bladder surgery. Science fiction has become science fact. The machines, with their pinpoint-accurate computer-controlled arms, are being introduced in the belief that they can perform minute surgical tasks such as cutting and stitching far more effectively than quiver-fingered humans, and with less risk of bleeding from excessive incisions or poor suturing. Google DeepMind, the tech giant's London-based company most famous for its groundbreaking use of artificial intelligence, is developing a software in partnership with NHS hospitals to alert staff to patients at risk of deterioration and death through kidney failure. The technology, which is run through a smartphone app, has the support of Lord Darzi, the surgeon and former health minister in the Blair government who is director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London. "Innovation is the only solution we have for a sustainable NHS, both economically and in meeting the challenges and demands upon it," Darzi told the Guardian in a preview of the technology. Darzi has led a team working on a smartphone app called Hark for the last five years, which DeepMind has now acquired and will develop. Hark identifies the tasks that need to be performed to prevent a patient who has been admitted to hospital deteriorating, allocates them to the right staff, and tracks what has been done – or not done.
