I Tested a Next-Gen AI Assistant. It Will Blow You Away
The most famous virtual valets around today--Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant--are a lot less impressive than the latest AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT or Google Bard. When the fruits of the recent generative AI boom get properly integrated into those legacy assistant bots, they will surely get much more interesting. To get a preview of what's next, I took an experimental AI voice helper called vimGPT for a test run. When I asked it to "subscribe to WIRED," it got to work with impressive skill, finding the correct web page and accessing the online form. If it had access to my credit card details I'm pretty sure it would have nailed it.
Samsung acquires Viv, a next-gen AI assistant built by the creators of Apple's Siri
Samsung has agreed to acquire Viv, an AI and assistant system co-founded by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer and Chris Brigham -- who created Siri, which was acquired by Apple in 2010. The three left Apple in the years after the acquisition and founded Viv in 2012. Pricing information was not available, but we'll check around. Viv has been billed as a more extensible, powerful version of Siri. Viv will continue to operate as an independent company that will provide services to Samsung and its platforms.
'Viv' is a next-gen AI assistant that runs circles around Siri, Alexa and Cortana
One of the brains behind Apple's iconic digital assistant Siri, Dag Kittlaus, took to the stage today at TechCrunch Disrupt NYC to show off his new project, Viv -- an AI assistant that aims to be "the intelligent interface for everything." "Will it be warmer than 70-degrees near the Golden Gate Bridge after 5pm the day after tomorrow?" Some of the biggest names in tech are coming to TNW Conference in Amsterdam this May. Viv delivered the answer in a matter of seconds, and correctly handled numerous oddly specific questions that followed, as well as ordering flowers, sending money as payment for drinks the previous night and even booking a hotel in under 60 seconds. Throughout the demo, the AI assistant demonstrated a profound understanding of context and intent as Kittlaus rapid-fired commands in natural language.

Siri's creators will debut next-gen AI assistant next week
Siri has been gradually getting better since its debut in 2011, but some of its original creators are set to introduce its successor, Viv, next week -- and, by all accounts, Siri better watch her back! Having operated in stealth mode for more than a year, Viv's arrival hopes to represent a significant step forward in artificial intelligence as AI assistants take on more of an active role in running our lives. It would be great to think so. One area Viv reportedly excels in is longer conversations, where a tool like Siri is likely to get lost. "Get me a pizza from Pizz'a Chicago near my office," one of the engineers said into his smartphone. It was their first real test of Viv … Everyone was a little nervous.
