Leaders of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday the agency would pursue companies who misuse artificial intelligence to violate laws against discrimination or be deceptive. The sudden popularity of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT this year has prompted calls for regulation amid concerns around the world about the possible use of the innovation for wrongdoing even as companies are seeking ways to use it to enhance efficiency. In a congressional hearing, FTC Chair Lina Khan and Commissioners Rebecca Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya were asked about concerns that recent innovation in artificial intelligence, which can be used to produce high quality deep fakes, could be used to make more effective scams or otherwise violate laws. Dr. Isaac Kohane, who's both a computer scientist at Harvard and a physician, teamed up with two colleagues to test drive GPT-4, with one main goal: To see how the newest artificial intelligence model from OpenAI performed in a medical setting. "I'm stunned to say: better than many doctors I've observed," he says in the forthcoming book, "The AI Revolution in Medicine," co-authored by independent journalist Carey Goldberg, and Microsoft vice president of research Peter Lee. In the book, Kohane says GPT-4, which was released in March 2023 to paying subscribers, answers US medical exam licensing questions correctly more than 90% of the time. It's a much better test-taker than previous ChatGPT AI models, GPT-3 and -3.5, and a better one than some licensed doctors, too. GPT-4 is not just a good test-taker and fact finder, though.

Apple is facing our face-masked future. This week, the company started testing some new software for the iPhone that will let device owners unlock the handset while wearing a face covering. There's a catch though, one that lines up with Apple's strategy of locking people in to different Apple products and highlights how challenging it can be to develop accurate facial recognition technology: The new face-unlock feature requires an Apple Watch. The first developer beta of iOS 14.5 includes updates to app tracking controls and Siri alongside the face-mask function. App-makers typically get early access to the newest version of iOS in order to launch or retool their apps well in advance of the formal software release. The fully-baked version of the software is expected to be made available to the general public this spring.

PARIS – The updated version of the computer that stunned humanity by beating the best mortal players at a strategy board game requiring intuition has become even smarter, its makers said Wednesday. Even more startling, the new version of AlphaGo is entirely self-taught -- a major step toward the rise of machines that achieve superhuman abilities "with no human input," they reported in the science journal Nature. Dubbed AlphaGo Zero, the artificial intelligence system learned by itself, within days, to master the ancient Chinese board game known as go -- said to be the most complex two-person game ever invented. It came up with its own, novel moves to eclipse all the go acumen that humans have acquired over thousands of years. After just three days of self-training, it was put to the ultimate test against its forerunner AlphaGo, which had dethroned the top human champs. AlphaGo Zero won by 100 games to zero.
