Google Chrome adds smart AI-powered features, with more to come
Google Chrome is adding three new generative AI features, ranging from the creative to the practical. For now, however, they're an experiment -- though it's likely they'll arrive in the stable version of the browser before long. The three new features include AI-powered tab organization, a way to use AI to generate tab backgrounds, and an AI writing feature that will debut next month. But to turn them on, you'll need to make sure your version of Chrome is up to date with version M121, and you'll need to ensure you enable the experimental features via the Settings menu. From there, you should see a list of settings, including one marked "Experimental AI".
Add Windows 11 features to Windows 10 with these helpful tools
Microsoft releases a new version of its two operating systems Windows 10 and 11 every autumn. However, the software company has only delivered new features for Windows 11, limiting Windows 10 to basic upgrades alone. Windows 10 also received an update a short time later, but you won't find any real innovations. It's limited to "improvements that affect the quality, productivity, and security of Windows 10," per Microsoft. That's disappointing for Windows 10 users -- but you're not fully left behind. Here's how you can implement the new Windows 11 features into Windows 10 as well. After years of stagnation, the Windows File Explorer is increasingly the focus of Microsoft developers. A feature that has been planned for years has made it into Windows Explorer with Windows 11 22H2: displaying multiple folders in different tabs.
ChatGPT is 'so wildly incorrect' that an Australian whistleblower is suing it for defamation
We all know ChatGPT gets stuff wrong. While that can be amusing, it's less funny if ChatGPT is mistakenly identifies you as a criminal. And it's less funny still if you were in fact the person who originally uncovered the crime in question. Indeed, you might find it so unfunny, you decide to sue for defamation. Which is exactly what Brian Hood, a Melbourne Australia-based politician is doing.

Bing now features an AI image generator -- here's how to use it
Following on from the integration of ChatGPT into the Bing search engine, Microsoft have now followed up by integrating another of OpenAI's products: the AI image generator DALL-E 2. It's fair to say that rolling out the "new Bing" with its ChatGPT-powered AI chat functionality was a whopping success for Microsoft. Now, says Microsoft Corporate VP Yusuf Mehdi in a blog post (opens in new tab), the tech giant are "taking the chat experience to the next level by making the new Bing more visual." What that boils down to is utilizing the OpenAI's AI image generator, DALL-E 2, to form the Bing Image Creator. Essentially, instead of using DALL-E 2 to generate images on its own website, you can type prompts into the Bing search engine to receive AI generated imagery from there using the same engine. So how do you use the Bing Image Creator?
How to Run a ChatGPT Alternative on Your Local PC
ChatGPT can give some impressive results, and also sometimes some very poor advice. But while it's free to talk with ChatGPT in theory, often you end up with messages about the system being at capacity, or hitting your maximum number of chats for the day, with a prompt to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus. Also, all of your queries are taking place on ChatGPT's server, which means that you need Internet and that OpenAI can see what you're doing. Fortunately, there are ways to run a ChatGPT-like LLM (Large Language Model) on your local PC, using the power of your GPU. The oobabooga text generation webui (opens in new tab) might be just what you're after, so we ran some tests to find out what it could -- and couldn't! Getting the webui running wasn't quite as simple as we had hoped, in part due to how fast everything is moving within the LLM space. There are the basic instructions in the readme, the one-click installers, and then multiple guides for how to build and run the LLaMa 4-bit models (opens in new tab).
5 Ways To Teach With ChatGPT
Learning to teach with ChatGPT is a new and somewhat controversial practice. Much of the conversation in education since the advanced AI chatbot debuted in late 2022 has focused on how to prevent ChatGPT cheating (opens in new tab). However, many educators now teach with ChatGPT and find it a helpful and versatile tool. Just remember ChatGPT is designed for use by adults 18 and up, and is still new technology with potential uses and misuses that are not yet fully understood. For example, technology related to ChatGPT that has been integrated with the Bing search engine for select users recently made headlines for saying disturbing things (opens in new tab) to a New York Times reporter.

Backlash erupts as Microsoft cuts AI ethics staff
Microsoft's new Bing Chat tool is making massive waves, but the tech giant now lacks a dedicated team to focus on implementing AI technology in a way that meets the company's guidelines. According to a new report from Platformer (via The Verge (opens in new tab)), Microsoft recently laid off one of the teams responsible for handling ethics in AI usage. This comes at a time when Bing Chat is exploding in popularity, with the tool pushing Bing to over 100 million daily active users. Platformer notes that while there is still a set of guiding principles in the form of Microsoft's Office of Responsible AI, there is no longer a dedicated team to interpret these principles in a rapidly evolving field of technology. "People would look at the principles coming out of the office of responsible AI and say, 'I don't know how this applies,'" said one former employee.

Meta's LLaMA AI aims to be more honest than ChatGPT
Facebook's parent company Meta has thrown its hat into the AI ring with the initial release of its own AI tool, designed specifically with research in mind. In a blog post (opens in new tab), Meta explained more about its Large Language Model Meta AI (LLaMA) which aims to "help researchers advance their work in this subfield of AI." LLaMA will not challenge the likes of Bing with ChatGPT for everyday use but will instead be used under a non-commercial license. Rather than being used to create new seasons of canceled Netflix shows, LLaMA will be targeted at the likes of universities, governments, and laboratories for research purposes. Mark Zuckerberg even posted on FaceBook (opens in new tab) referencing LLaMA's potential to solve math theorems and predict protein structures. With the research focus of LLaMA, Meta is determined not to repeat the mistakes of Google'sBard AI and Bing with ChatGPT, which have made some high-profile mishaps.
Nvidia predicts AI models one million times more powerful than ChatGPT within 10 years
So Nvidia claims for its AI accelerating hardware in terms of the performance boost it has delivered over the last decade and will deliver again over the next 10 years. The result, if Nvidia is correct, will be a new industry of AI factories across the world and gigantic breakthroughs in AI processing power. It also means, ostensibly, AI models one million times more powerful than existing examples, including ChatGPT, in AI processing terms at least. In Nvidia's earnings call yesterday (opens in new tab), CEO Jensen Huang claimed that Nvidia's GPUs had boosted AI processing performance by a factor of no less than one million in the last 10 years. "Moore's Law, in its best days, would have delivered 100x in a decade," Huang explained.
