Over the next two days, groups also picketed outside the offices of fellow tech giants Google and Amazon; other protesters, including clergy, were arrested while disrupting a closed-door AI health summit in the city. Tonight, protesters will target a Brooklyn gas power plant that was set to close - until it was purchased to power AI datacenters. The protests come on the heels of an Anthropic employee quitting his job with a warning that intensified an already-growing AI panic: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." Though it was far from the first time an AI expert had issued a doomsday message about the threat the tech poses, this time it dominated public attention, arriving as trust in big tech has hit an all-time low and communities across the country are trying to stop the building of datacenters.

An OpenAI agent hacked into the public website of the Australian government's Medicare public health insurance system in June, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has revealed. Albanese said he spoke with Sam Altman, the company's CEO, to express the country's "extreme concern" about the incident. He also criticized the company for taking too long to notify Australian authorities. According to The Guardian, OpenAI only sent an email about the breach to a general Australian government email address on September 10. And since authorities only check that account once a day, they didn't see it until September 11.

A defense lawyer appealing his client's murder conviction submitted a brief containing made-up police testimony and witnesses fabricated by OpenAI's ChatGPT, New Mexico's highest court has said. The New Mexico Supreme Court in the United States on Wednesday fined the lawyer, Stephen Aarons, and held him in contempt for failing to verify the accuracy of the court filing, which Aarons said he prepared with help from the artificial intelligence (AI) programme. The panel also said Aarons had "demonstrated a lack of remorse and a lack of concern for his client". The justices fined Aarons $5,000 and said they will refer him to an attorney disciplinary board for investigation. Aarons, in a statement to the Reuters news agency, said he had used ChatGPT to summarise the trial proceedings when he agreed to take up the defendant's appeal last year, and did not understand the degree to which AI could "hallucinate" facts.
