Apple gambles on new iPhone with AI features at lower cost
Much of the conversation around the new handset will likely centre around its power, with Apple electing to use the same A18 chip behind its more expensive devices. This means the 16e will be capable of playing the same games and running the same apps as other iPhones - though AI is likely at the heart of this decision. Apple boss Tim Cook said in the announcement the new model featured "the performance, intelligence and privacy" Apple fans "expect" from the firm. And he said the Apple Intelligence features on the device would "help you save time, quickly get more things done, and express yourself in new ways". The firm introduced its spin on the tech - Apple Intelligence - with this series of devices, which includes new tools for writing and incorporating OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT into Siri.
Apple banks on AI to boost sales of its new iPhone
Apple's share price fell during its "Glowtime" event, where it unveiled the iPhone 16 as well as other products, and ended the day flat. The company, worth 3 trillion, is facing concern that it is losing its edge in the burgeoning area of artificial intelligence. Sales of the iPhone - Apple's most important product which accounts for around half of its total sales - have stalled in recent months. They slipped by 1% over the nine months ended 29 June compared with a year earlier. Apple said its new phones, which come with longer lasting batteries, more powerful chips and enhanced privacy features, were its first built specifically to handle AI and its new "Apple Intelligence" tools, many of which were announced in June. Those include new tools for writing and creating new emojis as well incorporating OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT into Siri to help users with some queries and text generation requests.
How to Watch Apple's iPhone 16 Launch Event, and What to Expect
If tech news is feeling a little repeaty, with new phones and gadgets arriving in a seemingly endless stream over the last few weeks, know that it's not Groundhog Day. But it is almost time for yet another Apple event where new hardware will show up. At an event at its company headquarters next week, Apple will unveil the iPhone 16, as well as the next Apple Watch and (most likely) some AirPods. But like most tech events these days, much of the presentation is likely to revolve around artificial intelligence. The promotional image for next Monday's event is an Apple logo wrapped in a colorful glow with all the shades commonly used for Siri, Apple's digital assistant.
Consumer guides: Tech Gift ideas for everyone in your holiday list
You've heard so much about the new iPhones, and you want to get one. But seven models to choose from? And how to make your decision? "Upgrading from the XS Max soon," Wisconsin photographer Kevin Scott noted on Facebook. "Do you feel 12 Pro is worth the extra over the 12?" That was just one of the many questions we received during the holidays, which boiled down to variations of "Which iPhone should I buy?" and "Is the discounted Apple Watch a good buy?" You've come to the right place.

2020 iPhone might have Touch ID inside the screen
If you've been holding off on getting a new iPhone because Touch ID is gone, you might only have to wait another year. According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly testing iPhone prototypes with a new version of its Touch ID fingerprint sensor that's embedded in the display instead of inside a physical home button. The new in-display Touch ID would let "a user scan their fingerprint on a large portion of the display, and it would work in tandem with the existing Face ID system." SEE ALSO: What to expect from Apple's'iPhone 11' event on Sept. 10 The report corroborates an investor note by TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said last month that Apple was planning to resurrect the fingerprint sensor for iPhones slated for 2021. Bloomberg's report, however, suggests Apple could be readying the new Touch ID for iPhones for 2020 -- a year earlier if testing is successful. Apple replaced Touch ID with Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017, and the latest iPhones -- the iPhone XS and iPhone XR -- don't have a fingerprint sensor, either.
Why the iPhone Is Finally Fading
On Wednesday morning, a FedEx delivery man knocked on my door. His face bore a broad grin, his hands a svelte cardboard box. I nodded sleepily, and he thrust the box into my hands. "Your new iPhone is here!" he said, still smiling, evidently in anticipation of my own excitement. "Hey, thanks," I said, trying to match his enthusiasm, if only out of reciprocal politeness.

Who needs a new iPhone? iOS 12 adds tools and features to freshen up your current device
Apple's new iPhones will understandably grab the spotlight at the company's media shindig Wednesday at its Cupertino headquarters. But no less important for iPhone (and iPad) owners who have no intention of dashing off for the latest models, will be the official release of iOS 12. It is the software at the core of these devices that promises to freshen them up with new features and tools, including possibly adding zing to an aging handset, even one as old as the iPhone 5S. That means you should be able to install iOS 12 (which you can do for free) soon after Apple's press event. Just be aware that some of the features arriving with the latest software will require or work better on more recent hardware.
