108-year-old submarine wreck seen in stunning detail in new footage

Popular Science

Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. In 1917, two US submarines collided off the coast of San Diego and submarine USS F-1 sank to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with 19 crew members aboard. The horrible accident, whose wreckage was discovered in 1975, represents the US Naval Submarine Force's first wartime submarine loss. Now, researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have captured new footage of the 1,300 feet-deep underwater archaeological site. "They were technical dives requiring specialized expertise and equipment," Anna Michel, a co-lead of the expedition and chief scientist at the National Deep Submergence Facility, said in a statement. "We were careful and methodical in surveying these historical sites so that we could share these stunning images, while also maintaining the reverence these sites deserve."

New footage of mystery drones shows 'glowing orbs' over New York

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A New Jersey Mayor has shared new footage of'glowing orbs transforming into drones' over Long Island, adding more intrigue to this ongoing mystery. Michael Melham, the Mayor of Belleville, has been outspoken about the unexplained phenomena plaguing his state and the greater tri-state area since mid-November when the drones first appeared. He shared the bizarre footage on X, saying the clips'appears to show glowing orbs turning into drones. Verified not to be planes via flight tracker. In a recent interview with NewsNation, Melham said he is still getting reports of drone sightings'all over New Jersey, and even Long Island.' 'Here in New Jersey, we are about 500 mayors strong, we are still waiting for answers because our residents are still gravely concerned over what's flying just over our homes,' he said.

Mystery of bizarre drones over New Jersey deepens after new footage of UFOs emerge

Daily Mail - Science & tech

New footage of multiple eerie'triangle' craft flying above New Jersey has only compounded the mystery for locals. At least five or possibly six of the unidentified drones were captured in the new, 50-second cell phone video, which one commenter declared was'the clearest video yet.' One drone, heard roaring in the skies as it moved through the darkness, appeared to have a cluster of white lights on its underbelly and red lights blinking at the tips of its wings and tail. Another drone came into frame that resembled a classic'black triangle' UFO or the triangular TR-3B, which beamed bright white lights from its nose, wingtips and tail. Since mid-November, a wave of unexplained drone sightings above central Jersey has left both law enforcement and the general public watching the skies, hunting for clues on what these mysterious night flights might be.

Boston Dynamics robot helps with construction in new video

Daily Mail - Science & tech

If you're a construction worker, Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot could soon be coming for your job. New footage from the Massachusetts firm shows Atlas, its scary six-foot-tall bipedal humanoid bot, helping out with construction tasks. Atlas was already able to run and jump, but the footage shows it can now also grip objects, making it an ideal companion on the building site. In the new clip Atlas can be seen laying wood over scaffolding, holding and carrying a tool bag and performing an extravagant mid-air flip. Atlas the most human-like robot in Boston Dynamic's line-up, first unveiled to the public in July 2013.

Rare footage captures the first ever evidence of leopard seals sharing food

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Stunning footage has revealed the first evidence that leopard seals share food -- with the marine mammals caught divvying up a penguin as they feast on their kill. The ground-breaking footage was captured by a drone flying off the coast of the island of South Georgia, in the southern Atlantic. Researchers said that leopard seals are normally regarded as being solitary creatures. The Antarctic predators are largely'intolerant' of each other, but can be forced to hunt alongside each another when congregating in areas of plentiful prey, the experts added. The leopard seal is named for its black-spotted coat, whose pattern is similar to that of the big cat, though the seal's coat is grey rather than golden in colour.

AI lets you edit people talking in videos by adding or deleting words from a transcript

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Actors who flub dialogue may become less of a bane to producers thanks to an AI that allows such to be edited just by retyping a transcript of their lines. The software works by combining existing clips with digital face models to create new footage that is lip-synced to match the desired edits. The technology could have the potential to be abused to create more creepy deepfake videos that make people appear to say things that they never did. However, the researchers say that these risks are more than outweighed by the benefits of the program, which could also cheaply localise or translate content. At present, the technique only works on videos with a forward-facing interview that are of a particular length - 40 minutes or over.

Heathrow trials a driverless vehicle in new footage

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Fascinating footage has been released of a robot's-eye-view of a driverless vehicle trial at Heathrow Airport, side-by-side with how a human driver would see the routes it took. The clip comes from a'cargopod' vehicle that spent three and a half weeks running autonomously along a cargo route around the airside perimeter. The trial collected over 200km of data for Heathrow, cargo operator IAG Cargo and the software firm providing the self-driving tech, Oxford-based Oxbotica.
