From Adoption to Adaption: Tracing the Diffusion of New Emojis on Twitter
Zhou, Yuhang, Lu, Xuan, Ai, Wei
In the rapidly evolving landscape of social media, the introduction of new emojis in Unicode release versions presents a structured opportunity to explore digital language evolution. Analyzing a large dataset of sampled English tweets, we examine how newly released emojis gain traction and evolve in meaning. We find that community size of early adopters and emoji semantics are crucial in determining their popularity. Certain emojis experienced notable shifts in the meanings and sentiment associations during the diffusion process. Additionally, we propose a novel framework utilizing language models to extract words and pre-existing emojis with semantically similar contexts, which enhances interpretation of new emojis. The framework demonstrates its effectiveness in improving sentiment classification performance by substituting unknown new emojis with familiar ones. This study offers a new perspective in understanding how new language units are adopted, adapted, and integrated into the fabric of online communication.

iOS 16.4 is out with bug fixes and a ton of new emoji
If you own an Apple device, check your notifications: Apple has officially released updates for each of its major Platforms. The MacOS 13.3, and iOS / iPadOS 16.4 and WatchOS 9.4 updates include 21 new emoji, improved voice isolation for calls and a smattering of minor bug fixes. To start, the emoji keyboard is five new animals, two new hand gestures, three new colored hearts and a handful of household objects such as a folding fan, a flute and maracas. When you're not spamming friends with the new goose emoji, you'll be enjoying the benefits of the more subtle updates. Cellular calls now have Voice Isolation, designed to block out ambient noise.
Generative Art Is Stupid
A suppressed kiss, unwelcome or badly timed. These were some of the interpretations that reverberated in my brain after I viewed a weird digital-art trifle by the Emoji Mashup Bot, a popular but defunct Twitter account that combined the parts of two emoji into new, surprising, and astonishingly resonant compositions. The bot had taken the hand and eyes from the yawning emoji and mashed them together with the mouth from the kissing-heart emoji. Compare that simple method with supposedly more sophisticated machine-learning-based generative tools that have become popular in the past year or so. When I asked Midjourney, an AI-based art generator, to create a new emoji based on those same two, it produced compositions that were certainly emojiform but possessed none of the style or significance of the simple mashup: a series of yellow, heart-shaped bodies with tongues sticking out.

Apple lets you use Face ID to unlock your iPhone when wearing a MASK
Nearly two years since the Covid pandemic started, Apple is finally letting iPhone users unlock their iPhone with Face ID when wearing a face mask. Face ID, Apple's facial recognition system, has reportedly received the all-important update as part of iOS 15.4, which is now going through beta testing. Florida-based iOS user Brandon Butch, one of the early testers, has posted screenshots of the new feature to Twitter. It seems iPhone users have the option to turn the tool on and off, although Apple says Face ID is more effective while being able to see the entire face. Since the start of the pandemic, getting Face ID to automatically recognise our face to unlock our iPhones has been a bugbear as we've had masks over our faces.

New emoji for iPhone and Android postponed because of coronavirus pandemic
New emoji have been delayed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. There will be no new characters next year as the volunteers who help create them are struggling to deal with the health situation across the world, according to the Unicode Consortium, which organises new emoji releases. The new emoji that were announced earlier this year – which include transgender representation and extinct animals – are still expected to make their way to iPhone, Android and other platforms through the course of 2020. But the new updates that would have been planned for 2021 have been pushed back to the following year. Version 14 of Unicode's standards, which would have included the new characters, has been delayed by six months, it said.

New emojis promoted by Tinder represent interracial couples and a win for inclusiveness
Interracial emojis have been approved by Unicode in response to a Tinder petition. Emojis are getting more inclusive. In response to the more than 52,000 people who signed an online petition posted by the Tinder dating app last year, Unicode, the global organization responsible for emoji standards, released the artwork for emoji that represent interracial couples. Tinder wrote that, "While emojis for people of color and emojis for same-sex couples both became a reality in 2015, one group of people is still excluded from emoji representation: interracial couples. Isn't it time all love was represented?"
