Major music labels strike deals with new AI streaming service
The music industry has been battling AI companies, alleging illegal use of their songs. The world's largest music companies have licensed their works to a music startup called Klay, which is building a streaming service that will allow users to remake songs using artificial intelligence tools. Klay is the first music AI service to reach a deal with all three major record labels, Universal, Sony and Warner, according to people familiar with the deals. Klay plans to announce its agreements in the coming days, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential plans. Klay is building a product that will offer the features of a streaming service like Spotify, amplified by AI technology that will let users remake songs in different styles.

Google DeepMind's new AI can help historians understand ancient Latin inscriptions
To do this, Aeneas takes in partial transcriptions of an inscription alongside a scanned image of it. Using these, it gives possible dates and places of origins for the engraving, along with potential fill-ins for any missing text. For example, a slab damaged at the start and continuing with ... us populusque Romanus would likely prompt Aeneas to guess that Senat comes before us to create the phrase Senatus populusque Romanus, "The Senate and the people of Rome." This is similar to how Ithaca works. But Aeneas also cross-references the text with a stored database of almost 150,000 inscriptions, which originated everywhere from modern-day Britain to modern-day Iraq, to give possible parallels--other catalogued Latin engravings that feature similar words, phrases, and analogies.

Google's new AI will help researchers understand how our genes work
"We haven't designed or validated AlphaGenome for personal genome prediction, a known challenge for AI models," Google said in a statement. Underlying the AI system is the so-called transformer architecture invented at Google that also powers large language models like GPT-4. This one was trained on troves of experimental data produced by public scientific projects. Lareau says the system will not broadly change how his lab works day to day but could permit new types of research. For instance, sometimes doctors encounter patients with ultra-rare cancers, bristling with unfamiliar mutations.
Google's New AI Puts Breasts on Minors--And J. D. Vance
Sorry to tell you this, but Google's new AI shopping tool appears eager to give J. D. Vance breasts. This week, at its annual software conference, Google released an AI tool called Try It On, which acts as a virtual dressing room: Upload images of yourself while shopping for clothes online, and Google will show you what you might look like in a selected garment. Curious to play around with the tool, we began uploading images of famous men--Vance, Sam Altman, Abraham Lincoln, Michelangelo's David, Pope Leo XIV--and dressed them in linen shirts and three-piece suits. But when we tested a number of articles designed for women on these famous men, the tool quickly adapted: Whether it was a mesh shirt, a low-cut top, or even just a T-shirt, Google's AI rapidly spun up images of the vice president, the CEO of OpenAI, and the vicar of Christ with breasts. It's not just men: When we uploaded images of women, the tool repeatedly enhanced their décolletage or added breasts that were not visible in the original images.

I told Windows Notepad's new AI to turn Nvidia's fail into poetry
Windows 11 has quietly added a new feature to your PC: AI-powered editing to the Windows 11 Notepad app, called Rewrite. In November, Microsoft began testing the addition of AI rewrite capabilities in Notepad, and then developed it further as part of a February update. Now, Windows Latest has reported that the AI-powered Notepad appears to have rolled out to everyone. It has certainly shown up on my PCs, whether they're running the stable version of Windows or one of its test Insider editions. In the upper right-hand corner of Notepad, you should see a little "magic pen" icon. You may not see it if you don't subscribe to Microsoft 365, as those AI capabilities appear to be part of Microsoft's productivity subscription.
What Trump's New AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks Means For the Tech Industry
For much of 2024, one of President-elect Donald Trump's staunchest allies in Silicon Valley was David Sacks, an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and co-host of the popular podcast All-In. On his podcast and social media, Sacks argued that Trump's pro-industry stances would unleash innovation and spur growth in the tech industry. In June, Sacks hosted a fundraiser for Trump in San Francisco that included 300,000-a-person tickets. Now, Sacks has been rewarded with a position inside the White House: the brand-new role of "AI & crypto czar." It's unclear how much power this role actually has.

Tinder's new AI will pick your most attractive photos for you
Tinder is trying to end the long-festering nightmare of having to actually look at yourself long enough to choose profile pictures. The new Photo Selector feature uses AI to pore through pictures to pick the ones most likely to get that much-coveted right swipe. The tool has been in a testing phase since August of last year and it's finally ready for prime time. Photo Selector works by automatically browsing through a smartphone's entire camera roll and using AI algorithms to pick the, well, hottest ones. "With Photo Selector, Tinder offers a digital companion that curates a diverse selection of photos from users' camera roll optimized to help users find a match," the company wrote in a press release.
Copilot running locally on your PC? Microsoft's new AI could be the key
Many people believe that Microsoft will eventually provide a version of Copilot that will run within Windows right on your PC. Microsoft may have just tipped its hand with a new AI model, or LLM, that is specifically designed to run on local devices. On Monday, Microsoft introduced "Phi-3-mini," a 3.8-billion parameter language model that the company claims rivals the performance of the slightly older ChatGPT 3.5 and Mixtral 8x7B. The paper is titled "Phi-3 Technical Report: A Highly Capable Language Model Locally on Your Phone," which is clear evidence that Microsoft now has an LLM that can run directly on your PC. Microsoft hasn't said that Phi-3-mini will be the next Copilot, running locally on your PC.
Google DeepMind's new AI can follow commands inside 3D games it hasn't seen before
Google DeepMind has unveiled new research highlighting an AI agent that's able to carry out a swath of tasks in 3D games it hasn't seen before. The team has long been experimenting with AI models that can win in the likes of Go and chess, and even learn games without being told their rules. Now, for the first time, according to DeepMind, an AI agent has shown it's able to understand a wide range of gaming worlds and carry out tasks within them based on natural-language instructions. The researchers teamed up with studios and publishers such as Hello Games ( No Man's Sky), Tuxedo Labs ( Teardown) and Coffee Stain ( Valheim and Goat Simulator 3) to train the Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent (SIMA) on nine games. The team also used four research environments, including one built in Unity in which agents are instructed to form sculptures using building blocks.
