NASA's Perseverance FAILS to collect its first Mars samples
NASA has been waiting six months for Perseverance to collect its inaugural Mars core samples, but the American space Agency will have to wait a little longer after the rover failed during its first attempt. The percussive drill, coring bit and sample tube processing all worked'as intended, but data shows the sample tube was empty following extraction. The rover carries 43 titanium sample tubes, and is exploring Jezero Crater, where it will be gathering samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and dust) for future analysis on Earth. NASA scientists are currently analyzing the data with the hopes of finding the blunder and hopes to have a better understanding of what may occurred in the next few weeks. Jennifer Trosper, project manager for Perseverance at JPL, said in a statement: 'The initial thinking is that the empty tube is more likely a result of the rock target not reacting the way we expected during coring, and less likely a hardware issue with the Sampling and Caching System.

A former NASA engineer has created a hot tub with a difference, filled with liquid sand that acts the same way as water, allowing him to float and splash around. Mark Rober, 37, from Orange County, California, is known for his quirky science based videos on YouTube. And for his latest post, he decided to customize a hot tub so he could experience the sensation of floating in liquid sand, known in science as a fluidized air bed. Experiment: During the video, Mark reveals how he created'liquified sand' using an old hot tub, copper pipes and pressurized air'I am sitting in a hot tub filled to the brim with solid sand. This is one of the coolest things ever,' Mark told the camera as he sat in his creation.
NASA's AI scientists formed a club to dream up self-replicating robots and harpooning comets
A lot of the projects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab are considered "moonshots," but some ideas developing in the lab are so far-flung that the brains behind them don't want to involve the agency's top brass at all. To conjure up ideas outside of the space agency's regular mission cycle, top minds from JPL's artificial intelligence research teams have formed an informal group to talk about the big questions, like how autonomous robots could help space exploration around distant stars and methods for leveraging huge celestial bodies to carry our AI around the solar system. "We have a little skunkworks project here at JPL that we call'AI moonshots,' which has nothing to with the moon," JPL AI head Steve Chien tells Quartz. "It has to do with a bunch of AI people thinking about'What are ways we can have tremendous impact on NASA's mission?'" Chien says they've discussed concepts like robots that can convert near-Earth objects like asteroids into antennas; robots that self-replicate by using found materials to 3D-print new robots; autonomous exploration of still-undiscovered Planet 9; and even hitchhiking on passing comets. NASA spacecraft already work with some autonomy, Chien says, and building fully-autonomous models isn't necessarily a technical limitation--being able manually control the spacecraft's movement ensures good science.

Not long ago, news of a massive asteroid hurtling toward Earth would be a death sentence that humans, like the dinosaurs before us, would simply have to accept. But as near-Earth object detection has gotten more sophisticated, a new field called Planetary Defense has risen to meet the challenge of defending Earth from asteroids. However, speaking at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, Joseph Nuth, a researcher with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, warned that while asteroids and comets capable of resulting in mass extinctions are rare – as in, every-60-million-years rare – even small objects from space can cause a great deal of damage and the planet's scientists are are still woefully unprepared to deal with the threat. "It is really imperative that we reduce our reaction time," Dr. Nuth said at the meeting. "The biggest problem, basically, is there's not ... a lot we can do about it at the moment."

Sportswear giant reveals new technique – invented by a Nasa scientist – for 3D printing training shoes tailored to customers' individual specifications Reebok has unveiled something it calls "Liquid Factory", which the company says will bring back sports shoe manufacturing back to the US. Reebok calls its new factory idea a ground-breaking manufacturing innovation that could fundamentally change the process and speed of footwear creation. Developed by the Reebok Future team, the Liquid Factory process uses state-of-the-art software and robotics to literally draw shoes in three dimensions. The new technique uses 3D drawing, where a proprietary liquid material, created especially for Reebok by BASF, is used to draw shoe componentry cleanly, precisely and in three-dimensional layers. This proprietary layering technique is used to create totally unique footwear, without the use of traditional molds.
