Where NASA Posts Its Best Space Photos, and How to Find Them

WIRED

Explore decades of incredible images and videos of stars, planets, moons, and galaxies--most of which are free to use and share. The recent mission to the moon by Artemis II astronauts was memorable, inspiring, and scientifically important for so many reasons . It also brought us a treasure trove of new images and videos ready to be added to NASA's vast library of content. Consider this photo of Earth from more than 250,000 miles away, for example, taken from the other side of the moon. Or these widely shared pictures of our home planet from inside the Orion capsule, which were taken using iPhone 17 Pro Max phones.

NASA images of asteroid Bennu reveal 'extremely bright' chunks of another asteroid on the surface

Daily Mail - Science & tech

NASA spotted pieces of asteroid Vesta ranging in size from five to 14 feet scattered across Bennu's southern hemisphere and near its center. The boulders were detected in images from the OSIRIS-Rex and appear much brighter than the surrounding area of dark, rich carbon. The team analyzed the chunks using an on-board spectrometer and found signs of the mineral pyroxene - a known compound on Vesta. NASA theorizes the material came from Bennu's parent asteroid that was struck by a fragment from Vesta. NASA spotted pieces of asteroid Vesta ranging in size from five to 14 feet scattered across Bennu's southern hemisphere and near its center. Hannah Kaplan of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said: 'Our leading hypothesis is that Bennu inherited this material from its parent asteroid after a vestoid (a fragment from Vesta) struck the parent.'

NASA image from spacecraft shows Earth from 3m miles away

Daily Mail - Science & tech

It is a unique view of our planet from a spacecraft speeding to a rendezvous with an asteroid. NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft took this incredible image of home from 3 million miles (5 million kilometers) from Earth, about 13 times the distance between the Earth and Moon. Asteroid Bennu, a carbon-rich hunk of rock that might contain organic materials or molecular precursors to life. Three images (different color wavelengths) were combined and color-corrected to make the composite, and the Moon was'stretched' (brightened) to make it more easily visible. The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer--is to map and return samples. It is also an asteroid that could someday make a close pass or even a collision with Earth, though not for several centuries.
