This issue marks the end of volume 12 and my last issue as editor in chief. In 1981 when Lee Erman (then chairman of the Publications Committee) asked me to take over the editorship of a fledgling magazine, I assumed it would be a Z-or 3-year responsibility. I never expected to still be doing it 10 years later. I also never expected it to be such a pleasurable avocation. The pleasure comes from several directions: sitting in an honored position to observe developments in AI all over the world by being the recipient of dozens of papers every year; working with an excellent supporting staff of coeditors, assistants, and production people; and receiving compliments from colleagues for doing a good job.
Happy Anniversary, AAAI and AI Magazine!
This special issue celebrates the anniversary by presenting perspectives on AAAI's history, on the future of AAAI, and on the past and future of artificial intelligence. It highlights the many voices contributing to AAAI by featuring personal remembrances and visions from many people, including founders of AAAI, presidents who guided the society's development, and others spurring on AI research and applications. While a single issue can only scratch the surface, this special issue clearly illustrates the spirit, accomplishment, and optimism that will drive the next 25 years. It is fitting for AI Magazine to present such a commemoration: 2005 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the magazine as well. From the beginning, AI Magazine has brought the AI community together to share ideas and advances and to introduce newcomers to the challenges and accomplishments of the field.
Rethinking AI Magazine
Goel, Ashok K. (Georgia Institute of Technology)
During the last 36 years of its illustrious history, ince its inception in 1980, AI Magazine has played an the magazine has gone through several transformations. Now the magazine is going through another transition: David Leake, the longtime editor-in-chief is moving on after 17 years of distinguished service, though fortunately he will continue to advise us as editor emeritus. I am honored and delighted to follow David. I have been a member of the Editorial Board of AI Magazine for several years, associate editor since August 2015, and editor elect since February 2016; my tenure as editor-in-chief starts with this winter 2016 issue. I thank David, Managing Editor Mike Hamilton, former AAAI President Tom Dietterich, and AAAI for recruiting me for this challenge....

If you think this paper has strongly negative effect on the rate of The AAAI Press shortcomings, but its publication progress in the field. However, by all measures the '93 are hashed out in public. "Preliminary work" category were doesn't mean that the author doesn't At the get a fair, public hearing. "innovative" papers was a failure. My explanation of this fact is "expert" bodies in private discussion. General Motors Corporation have read the papers being discussed, around.

Letters to the Editor
I appreciated very much the Spring 1990 issue of the AI Magazine on Robotic Assembly and Task Planning. It seems to me, however, that some good work that has been carried out on this subject in Europe during recent years has not been covered very much. Also commons on the low participation levels of women in the computer industry, suggestions for the inclusion of dissertation abstracts, comments on the Feldman article in the Fall 1990 issue, and a note about the discontinuance of plastic coverings on AI Magazine.
