Head Pursuit: Probing Attention Specialization in Multimodal Transformers
Language and vision-language models have shown impressive performance across a wide range of tasks, but their internal mechanisms remain only partly understood. In this work, we study how individual attention heads in text-generative models specialize in specific semantic or visual attributes. Building on an established interpretability method, we reinterpret the practice of probing intermediate activations with the final decoding layer through the lens of signal processing. This lets us analyze multiple samples in a principled way and rank attention heads based on their relevance to target concepts. Our results show consistent patterns of specialization at the head level across both unimodal and multimodal transformers. Remarkably, we find that editing as few as 1% of the heads, selected using our method, can reliably suppress or enhance targeted concepts in the model output.
HypeMARL: Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning For High-Dimensional, Parametric, and Distributed Systems

Deep reinforcement learning has recently emerged as a promising feedback control strategy for complex dynamical systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). When dealing with distributed, high-dimensional problems in state and control variables, multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has been proposed as a scalable approach for breaking the curse of dimensionality. In particular, through decentralized training and execution, multiple agents cooperate to steer the system towards a target configuration, relying solely on local state and reward information. However, the principle of locality may become a limiting factor whenever a collective, nonlocal behavior of the agents is crucial to maximize the reward function, as typically happens in PDE-constrained optimal control problems. In this work, we propose HypeMARL: a decentralized MARL algorithm tailored to the control of high-dimensional, parametric, and distributed systems. HypeMARL employs hypernetworks to effectively parametrize the agents' policies and value functions with respect to the system parameters and the agents' relative positions, encoded by sinusoidal positional encoding. Through the application on challenging control problems, such as density and flow control, we show that HypeMARL (i) can effectively control systems through a collective behavior of the agents, outperforming state-of-the-art decentralized MARL, (ii) can efficiently deal with parametric dependencies, (iii) requires minimal hyperparameter tuning and (iv) can reduce the amount of expensive environment interactions by a factor of ~10 thanks to its model-based extension, MB-HypeMARL, which relies on computationally efficient deep learning-based surrogate models approximating the dynamics locally, with minimal deterioration of the policy performance.
Hindsight Experience Replay Accelerates Proximal Policy Optimization

Hindsight experience replay (HER) accelerates off-policy reinforcement learning algorithms for environments that emit sparse rewards by modifying the goal of the episode post-hoc to be some state achieved during the episode. Because post-hoc modification of the observed goal violates the assumptions of on-policy algorithms, HER is not typically applied to on-policy algorithms. Here, we show that HER can dramatically accelerate proximal policy optimization (PPO), an on-policy reinforcement learning algorithm, when tested on a custom predator-prey environment.
CDPA: Common and Distinctive Pattern Analysis between High-dimensional Datasets
A representative model in integrative analysis of two high-dimensional data types is to decompose each data matrix into a low-rank common matrix generated by latent factors shared across data types, a low-rank distinctive matrix corresponding to each data type, and an additive noise matrix. Existing decomposition methods claim that their common matrices capture the common pattern of the two data types. However, their so-called common pattern only denotes the common latent factors but ignores the common information between the two coefficient matrices of these latent factors. We propose a novel method, called the common and distinctive pattern analysis, which appropriately defines the two patterns by further incorporating the common and distinctive information of the coefficient matrices. A consistent estimation approach is developed for high-dimensional settings, and shows reasonably good finite-sample performance in simulations. We illustrate the superiority of proposed method over the state-of-the-art by real-world data examples obtained from Human Connectome Project and The Cancer Genome Atlas.
Generating Similar Graphs From Spherical Features

We propose a novel model for generating graphs similar to a given example graph. Unlike standard approaches that compute features of graphs in Euclidean space, our approach obtains features on a surface of a hypersphere. We then utilize a von Mises-Fisher distribution, an exponential family distribution on the surface of a hypersphere, to define a model over possible feature values. While our approach bears similarity to a popular exponential random graph model (ERGM), unlike ERGMs, it does not suffer from degeneracy, a situation when a significant probability mass is placed on unrealistic graphs. We propose a parameter estimation approach for our model, and a procedure for drawing samples from the distribution. We evaluate the performance of our approach both on the small domain of all 8-node graphs as well as larger real-world social networks.
