Some things can be trickier to locate than most, like a particular style of clothing or a certain fragrance. But when it comes to food that makes your mouth and eyes water, Google thinks it can help. Engadget spoke with vice president and general manager of Local Search Yul Kwon to learn how the company believes it can bring people to the dishes they're craving. You might remember him as the winner of Survivor: Cook Islands, but he's also been a management consultant, a law practitioner and the owner of several Red Mango franchise locations in California.

AI-powered parking platform Metropolis bags $167M – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Metropolis, a startup building payment infrastructure for parking facilities, today announced that it raised $167 million in a Series B round co-led by 3L Capital and Assembly Ventures with participation from Dragoneer, Eldridge Industries, Silver Lake Waterman, UP Partners and former deputy mayor of New York Dan Doctoroff. CEO Alex Israel told TechCrunch via email that the proceeds will be put toward product development, expanding the company's team and expanding into "new mobility adjacent verticals." Israel contends that parking payment infrastructure is outdated on the whole. Parking garages are stuck in the pre-internet age, he asserts -- disconnected from the digital payments ecosystem (e.g., schemes like Apple Pay and Google Pay). Meanwhile, FlashParking, Passport, AirGarage and REEF Technology (formerly ParkJockey) have raised hundreds of millions from SoftBank and others for tech-forward parking management.

Is Federate Data Sharing Our Last Great Hope to Scare Off the Next AI Winter?

#artificialintelligence

From the earliest themes of artificial intelligence in Greek mythology, people have long thought about AI and the possibilities it may hold. With the advances in computation and mathematics, Alan Turing's 1950 paper on thinking machines sparked the first real developments of this in practice. The first proof of concept was initialised through Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw, and Herbert Simon's, Logic Theorist, a program designed to mimic the problem-solving skills of humans -- considered by many to be the first artificial intelligence program presented in 1956. AI is 60 years young, we're only at the very beginning. Despite its 60 year history and all of the hype in the last few years, there's a long way to go.

Access Earth adding AI and social distancing to its app

#artificialintelligence

Boost My Business shines a spotlight on a tech start-up whose app maps accessibility via its users and AI. Fiona Alston chatted to Matthew McCann CEO of Access Earth about how his app helps users find businesses which have the accessibility requirements for their particular needs. McCann has cerebral palsy and uses a rollator to get around, and it's his personal experience of trying to access businesses like restaurants and hotels which proved the need for the software. "Growing up it was difficult for me to find accessibility information whether it was going out to eat somewhere or going to the shops and for me that's a really important thing to know ahead of time," says McCann. "I realised then going into college I wanted to be able to do something about that - figuring out the world isn't accessible at the moment and I wanted to make that change," he says.
