Uber launches new live video feature to monitor teen riders
Uber has faced accusations that the company has not done enough to prevent sexual assault and other violent incidents against riders, including a recent lawsuit that found the company liable for a woman's rape after the app's automatic safety provisions failed to flag the ride as dangerous. In June, the company announced it was instituting stricter background check requirements and permanent bans for offending drivers. Live video is currently being piloted for riders in several cities, including Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, and El Paso.

A investigation also found that Uber had received reports of sexual abuse or misconduct every eight minutes between 2017 to 2022. In response, Uber stated that 75 percent of these reports were less serious. A Phoenix court subsequently found Uber partially liable for rape and violence its drivers committed against passengers . Uber has since expanded its safety measures, and now runs background checks on the past 99 years of a driver's life rather than just seven.
Sentiment-oriented Transformer-based Variational Autoencoder Network for Live Video Commenting

Automatic live video commenting is with increasing attention due to its significance in narration generation, topic explanation, etc. However, the diverse sentiment consideration of the generated comments is missing from the current methods. Sentimental factors are critical in interactive commenting, and lack of research so far. Thus, in this paper, we propose a Sentiment-oriented Transformer-based Variational Autoencoder (So-TVAE) network which consists of a sentiment-oriented diversity encoder module and a batch attention module, to achieve diverse video commenting with multiple sentiments and multiple semantics. Specifically, our sentiment-oriented diversity encoder elegantly combines VAE and random mask mechanism to achieve semantic diversity under sentiment guidance, which is then fused with cross-modal features to generate live video comments. Furthermore, a batch attention module is also proposed in this paper to alleviate the problem of missing sentimental samples, caused by the data imbalance, which is common in live videos as the popularity of videos varies. Extensive experiments on Livebot and VideoIC datasets demonstrate that the proposed So-TVAE outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of the quality and diversity of generated comments. Beverly Hills police add another 'eye in the sky' with expanded drone program
The 911 caller reported seeing a man wrestle a woman to the ground in an attempt to rob her before taking off on a bicycle. Beverly Hills police responded, but before a patrol car could get to the scene, officers already had their eyes on the suspect. The police recently added a new drone known as "Hawkeye" to its drone patrol that will give officers a view of crime scenes before they arrive, locate suspects before they're lost, and help patrol the streets of the upscale community. The drone's high-resolution camera is capable of reading a license plate a half-mile away. The city's police department introduced Hawkeye to the city on Tuesday in a set of social media posts that included video of the drone in action.
