Friction Estimation for In-Hand Planar Motion

This paper presents a method for online estimation of contact properties during in-hand sliding manipulation with a parallel gripper. We estimate the static and Coulomb friction as well as the contact radius from tactile measurements of contact forces and sliding velocities. The method is validated in both simulation and real-world experiments. Furthermore, we propose a heuristic to deal with fast slip-stick dynamics which can adversely affect the estimation.


Bimanual In-hand Manipulation using Dual Limit Surfaces

In-hand object manipulation is an important capability for dexterous manipulation. In this paper, we introduce a modeling and planning framework for in-hand object reconfiguration, focusing on frictional patch contacts between the robot's palms (or fingers) and the object. Our approach leverages two cooperative patch contacts on either side of the object to iteratively reposition it within the robot's grasp by alternating between sliding and sticking motions. Unlike previous methods that rely on single-point contacts or restrictive assumptions on contact dynamics, our framework models the complex interaction of dual frictional patches, allowing for greater control over object motion. We develop a planning algorithm that computes feasible motions to reorient and re-grasp objects without causing unintended slippage. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in simulation and real-world experiments, showing significant improvements in object stability and pose accuracy across various object geometries.


Locomotion as Manipulation with ReachBot

Caves and lava tubes on the Moon and Mars are sites of geological and astrobiological interest but consist of terrain that is inaccessible with traditional robot locomotion. To support the exploration of these sites, we present ReachBot, a robot that uses extendable booms as appendages to manipulate itself with respect to irregular rock surfaces. The booms terminate in grippers equipped with microspines and provide ReachBot with a large workspace, allowing it to achieve force closure in enclosed spaces such as the walls of a lava tube. To propel ReachBot, we present a contact-before-motion planner for non-gaited legged locomotion that utilizes internal force control, similar to a multi-fingered hand, to keep its long, slender booms in tension. Motion planning also depends on finding and executing secure grips on rock features. We use a Monte Carlo simulation to inform gripper design and predict grasp strength and variability. Additionally, we use a two-step perception system to identify possible grasp locations. To validate our approach and mechanisms under realistic conditions, we deployed a single ReachBot arm and gripper in a lava tube in the Mojave Desert. The field test confirmed that ReachBot will find many targets for secure grasps with the proposed kinematic design.


Design, Calibration, and Control of Compliant Force-sensing Gripping Pads for Humanoid Robots

This paper introduces a pair of low-cost, light-weight and compliant force-sensing gripping pads used for manipulating box-like objects with smaller-sized humanoid robots. These pads measure normal gripping forces and center of pressure (CoP). A calibration method is developed to improve the CoP measurement accuracy. A hybrid force-alignment-position control framework is proposed to regulate the gripping forces and to ensure the surface alignment between the grippers and the object. Limit surface theory is incorporated as a contact friction modeling approach to determine the magnitude of gripping forces for slippage avoidance. The integrated hardware and software system is demonstrated with a NAO humanoid robot. Experiments show the effectiveness of the overall approach.


Planar Friction Modelling with LuGre Dynamics and Limit Surfaces

Contact surfaces in planar motion exhibit a coupling between tangential and rotational friction forces. This paper proposes planar friction models grounded in the LuGre model and limit surface theory. First, distributed planar extended state models are proposed and the Elasto-Plastic model is extended for multi-dimensional friction. Subsequently, we derive a reduced planar friction model, coupled with a pre-calculated limit surface, that offers reduced computational cost. The limit surface approximation through an ellipsoid is discussed. The properties of the planar friction models are assessed in various simulations, demonstrating that the reduced planar friction model achieves comparable performance to the distributed model while exhibiting ~80 times lower computational cost.

Precise Object Sliding with Top Contact via Asymmetric Dual Limit Surfaces

In this paper, we discuss the mechanics and planning algorithms to slide an object on a horizontal planar surface via frictional patch contact made with its top surface. Here, we propose an asymmetric dual limit surface model to determine slip boundary conditions for both the top and bottom contact. With this model, we obtain a range of twists that can keep the object in sticking contact with the robot end-effector while slipping on the supporting plane. Based on these constraints, we derive a planning algorithm to slide objects with only top contact to arbitrary goal poses without slippage between end effector and the object. We validate the proposed model empirically and demonstrate its predictive accuracy on a variety of object geometries and motions. We also evaluate the planning algorithm over a variety of objects and goals demonstrate an orientation error improvement of 90\% when compared to methods naive to linear path planners.


Motion Planning for a Climbing Robot with Stochastic Grasps

Motion planning for a multi-limbed climbing robot must consider the robot's posture, joint torques, and how it uses contact forces to interact with its environment. This paper focuses on motion planning for a robot that uses nontraditional locomotion to explore unpredictable environments such as martian caves. Our robotic concept, ReachBot, uses extendable and retractable booms as limbs to achieve a large reachable workspace while climbing. Each extendable boom is capped by a microspine gripper designed for grasping rocky surfaces. ReachBot leverages its large workspace to navigate around obstacles, over crevasses, and through challenging terrain. Our planning approach must be versatile to accommodate variable terrain features and robust to mitigate risks from the stochastic nature of grasping with spines. In this paper, we introduce a graph traversal algorithm to select a discrete sequence of grasps based on available terrain features suitable for grasping. This discrete plan is complemented by a decoupled motion planner that considers the alternating phases of body movement and end-effector movement, using a combination of sampling-based planning and sequential convex programming to optimize individual phases. We use our motion planner to plan a trajectory across a simulated 2D cave environment with at least 95% probability of success and demonstrate improved robustness over a baseline trajectory. Finally, we verify our motion planning algorithm through experimentation on a 2D planar prototype.


Simultaneous Contact-Rich Grasping and Locomotion via Distributed Optimization Enabling Free-Climbing for Multi-Limbed Robots

While motion planning of locomotion for legged robots has shown great success, motion planning for legged robots with dexterous multi-finger grasping is not mature yet. We present an efficient motion planning framework for simultaneously solving locomotion (e.g., centroidal dynamics), grasping (e.g., patch contact), and contact (e.g., gait) problems. To accelerate the planning process, we propose distributed optimization frameworks based on Alternating Direction Methods of Multipliers (ADMM) to solve the original large-scale Mixed-Integer NonLinear Programming (MINLP). The resulting frameworks use Mixed-Integer Quadratic Programming (MIQP) to solve contact and NonLinear Programming (NLP) to solve nonlinear dynamics, which are more computationally tractable and less sensitive to parameters. Also, we explicitly enforce patch contact constraints from limit surfaces with micro-spine grippers. We demonstrate our proposed framework in the hardware experiments, showing that the multi-limbed robot is able to realize various motions including free-climbing at a slope angle 45{\deg} with a much shorter planning time.
