Lauren Maffeo is a research analyst who joined the global technology sector in 2012. She started her career as a freelance journalist covering tech news for The Next Web and The Guardian. She has also worked with CEOs of pre-seed to profitable SaaS startups on media strategy. Lauren joined GetApp, a Gartner company, as a content editor in 2016. She covers the impact of emerging tech like AI on small and midsize business owners.

Dr. Carol Reiley's achievements are too long to list. She co-founded Drive.ai, a self-driving car startup that raised $50 million in its second round of funding last year. Forbes magazine named her one of "20 Incredible Women in AI," and she built intelligent robot systems as a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University. But when she built a voice-activated human-robot interface, her own creation couldn't recognize her voice. Dr. Reiley used Microsoft's speech recognition API to build her interface.

My lightning talk at the useR!2017 conference was R in Minecraft: a five-minute tour of the miner and craft packages and associated book designed to teach kids how to use the R language while manipulating the world of Minecraft. You can see my talk below (starting at the 10:40 mark), and the slides (mostly created in Minecraft) are available for download as well.

Most of the talks will be given by well-known invited speakers. However, we would also like to give students and startups an opportunity to present their work and research. It will be realized in the form of short lightning talks. Each speaker will get a free ticket to the conference. If you are interested in becoming a lightning speaker, please send us a short paper (less than 1000 words) describing your machine learning project.
